David and Carin Connolly have been through some turbulent highs and lows since they met and married in Zimbabwe more than 30 years ago. An accident left David paralysed and the economic vandalism of the country’s despotic rulers stole their retirement funds. A British citizen, David hoped to find some calm in Scotland with his wife, who has acted as his carer for decades. The Home Office have a very different view and decided Carin should leave the UK and head back to Zimbabwe. This devoted couple now face the dreadful prospect of moving to a country with no proper medical care. Or David has to say goodbye to his wife and hope they’ll be reunited one day. It’s this kind of deeply emotional experience the Home Office cannot cope with. Officials are clearly too preoccupied with the legacy of Theresa May’s “hostile environment” to see sense. No right-thinking person would come to the conclusion the best result is to split a family and place them both in danger. This is a British passport-holder and his wife, who wants to be treated with dignity.
