8 Even before the majority of Bay Area counties stopped allowing outdoor dining earlier this week, many prominent restaurants had already decided to close temporarily — waiting things out until certain benchmarks were reached, such as a return to indoor dining. When San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin and Santa Clara counties and Berkeley announced last week that they would no longer allow outdoor dining, starting Monday, many more restaurants followed suit. "When we got this final blow it felt better to hibernate, and just shut it down," said Gayle Pirie, chef-owner of Foreign Cinema, which closed after Sunday brunch and will reopen when out door dining is allowed again on its enclosed outdoor patio. "We know what the Foreign Cinema experience is, and we want to preserve that." Hibernation can be tough, but it makes sense for many restaurants in the current moment. Though the holidays are usually a very busy time for the hospitality business, most diners aren't making big plans this year.
