Gavin Newsom Faces Backlash After Posting TikTok Video From Inside Closed Restaurant

California Governor Gavin Newsom posted a video to his TikTok account with celebrity George Lopez on Saturday. The pair were shown inside a restaurant in an area of California that currently doesn't allow indoor dining. In the video, Newsom and Lopez talk about where to find information about coronavirus vaccine eligibility in California. At the beginning of the clip, Lopez is shown wearing a face mask while sitting at a table inside the restaurant. "How do I find out if I can get a vaccination," Lopez asked. Newsom, also wearing a face mask, then appeared in a mirror behind the celebrity and said, "You got to go to myturn.ca.gov," referring to California's website dedicated to helping residents navigate the process of determining their coronavirus vaccine eligibility. "Wait a minute," Lopez said in surprise. "Thank you, governor." Newsom and Lopez were inside Los Amigos Mexican Restaurant in Fresno, California, during the recording of the TikTok video. Celebrity chef Jose Andres: ‘I do believe a force for good will take over’

It takes Jose Andres three or four tries to appear on screen. Evidently, Washington’s top chef and food philanthropist (he’s distributed millions of meals since the lockdown began) is not as skilled in technology as he is at cooking. After some good-natured cursing, Andres’s bearded visage eventually pops up. He is sitting outside a restaurant in Virginia Beach, a town with three military bases 338km south of Washington, where his charity, World Central Kitchen , is delivering food. The burly Andres seems larger than life. He is wearing a WCK-branded baseball cap and a green bandana around his neck. But for that and a thick Spanish accent, I could almost mistake him for Santa Claus. “You know what happened,” Andres asked. “When I touch my earplug in a Zoom, Siri [Apple’s voice activation service] takes over. It sounds like Siri is jealous because when I touch my ear, she whispers ‘Hey Jose, what do you want?’ ‘Nothing! Leave me alone!’” Relieved we have finally … [Read more...] about Celebrity chef Jose Andres: ‘I do believe a force for good will take over’

New York City mayor outlines first reopening step

NEW YORK: New York Mayor Bill de Blasio on Thursday (May 28) outlined the first steps for reopening the United States' most populous city, envisioning up to 400,000 people heading back to their workplaces, an easing of the lockdown that began in March. The city's famed restaurants and bars will remain closed, except for takeout and delivery, but the City Council unveiled legislation to allow outdoor dining. COVID-19 has killed more than 20,000 of New York's over 8 million people, making the city the American epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic. READ: Rare syndrome tied to COVID-19 kills three children in New York, Cuomo says With hospitalisations and deaths trending lower across New York state, all regions except the city - which is still working to increase hospital bed capacity and meet other criteria - have begun the process of restarting their economies. De Blasio said he expected the reopening's first phase to be announced by the second week of June and, in line … [Read more...] about New York City mayor outlines first reopening step

Chipotle reports 16per cent drop in March same-store sales

REUTERS: Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc on Tuesday reported a 16per cent fall in March same-store sales, as the coronavirus pandemic forced the company to keep its restaurants closed to diners. The company also withdrew its forecast of delivering mid-single digit percentage growth in comparable restaurant sales this year. Chipotle's same-store sales rose 3.3per cent in the first quarter ended March 31, helped by strong demand and higher menu prices in the early part of the year, as well surging online orders. Separately, the U.S. Department of Justice said on Tuesday Chipotle would pay US$25 million to resolve criminal charges related to the company's involvement in foodborne illness outbreaks that sickened hundreds of people between 2015 and 2018.
