What causes water retention and how to deal with swollen ankles and fingers

If you've ever spent an afternoon on the couch with the TV and a bag of salted chips, or gone to bed with a belly full of Teochew porridge and its accoutrements of salted eggs, fish, vegetables and cured meats, you’re probably familiar with the feeling. You wake up the next morning feeling puffed up and heavier than usual. Your ring feels like it's strangling your finger. Instead of ankles, you now have cankles. And when you press on the swollen areas for a few seconds, you get weird temporary dimples. In other words, you could very well stand in for the Michelin Man. That’s water retention or edema in action. READ: Beauty Fixes: How to sort out that puffy face and bloated situation in 4 weeks WATER RETENTION CAUSE #1: SALT The most common cause for edema is eating too much sodium-loaded food. This upsets your body's sodium-to-water balance, which it needs to function. As a result, your body produces an anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) that nudges the kidneys to hold on to … [Read more...] about What causes water retention and how to deal with swollen ankles and fingers

FIFA ban African football head for five years after ethics investigation

MANCHESTER, England: The head of African football, Ahmad Ahmad, has been banned from football for five years by FIFA following an ethics investigation by world soccer's governing body. Ahmad, who is president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), had intended to stand in an election in March in which he would have faced a number of challengers. FIFA said in a statement the independent Ethics Committee has found Ahmad guilty of offering and accepting gifts and other benefits, and misappropriation of funds. FIFA had "sanctioned him with a ban from all football-related activity (administrative, sports or any other) at both national and international level for five years," it said. It also fined him 200,000 Swiss francs (US$200,000). Ahmad declined to comment when contacted by Reuters. Former CAF general secretary Amr Fahmy, who died earlier this year from cancer, had been dismissed after he made corruption allegations against Ahmad last year in a document sent to … [Read more...] about FIFA ban African football head for five years after ethics investigation

Indian Air, Water, and Land Pollution Has Worsened, Says Environmental Group CSE

India's air, water, and land pollution is worsening and there is little that is being done to contain the contamination, an environment-related NGO has warned in its findings after carrying out a survey, 2021 State of India's Environment. Conducted by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), a non-governmental organisation, the survey observed that failure to take urgent corrective measures has led to the worsening of pollution over 10 years even in "critical" industrial clusters. The survey focused on the findings of the Central Pollution Control Board's Comprehensive Environmental Pollution Index from 2009-2018 to make its observations. The analysis of the data found that massive deterioration occurred in the 88 industrial clusters identified in the country by India's Central Pollution Control Board in 2009. Air pollution worsened in 33 of the industrial clusters, the quality of water deteriorated in 45, and land pollution increased in 17. The survey also found … [Read more...] about Indian Air, Water, and Land Pollution Has Worsened, Says Environmental Group CSE

French Fishermen Angered After Destructive ‘Bottom Trawling’ in UK Waters Sabotaged

Activists aboard the Greenpeace ship Esperanza are said to have dropped several large boulders into the English channel in an effort to stop bottom-trawling fishing in a protected area favoured by French boats. The ecological activist group tossed 18 boulders overboard in the channel in order to create a barrier and prevent trawling by fishermen who use a bottom-trawling method to scrape the seabed, which Greenpeace has likened to taking a bulldozer to a national park. According to reports , the area impacted is one used by French ships. The group announced the formation of the “boulder barrier” on Twitter on Friday, and later released a full statement on their website saying, “This barrier will stop destructive fishing in what’s supposed to be a protected part of the ocean. But we’re also here to expose the government’s failure to look after its so-called Marine Protected Areas all around the UK.” “These boulders will deter destructive industrial ‘bottom trawlers’ from … [Read more...] about French Fishermen Angered After Destructive ‘Bottom Trawling’ in UK Waters Sabotaged
