When Apple unveiled the News app in the WWDC keynote on Monday, my first reaction was glee. As a past participant in its Newsstand experiment , which is probably the best way to describe it, the News app had several characteristics that made it seem far superior for many purposes. By the evening, though, gloom had set in. The News app looks more like yet another push news service--the latest incarnation of PointCast for those with long memories--that delivers what the product's producer thinks is valuable to you rather than what you necessarily want. It's sophisticated, but takes choice out of readers' hands. If a user can't choose any news source, whether a blog updated yearly and read by 10 people or a multinational media conglomerate's river of articles, I believe it's doomed to fall by the wayside. In brief: Edge has experienced a boost in popularity recently, but Microsoft wants to drag more Windows users away from Chrome and onto its browser. In a new A/B test, the Redmond company is extolling the virtues of Chromium Edge-powered web apps by promoting them on Windows 10’s taskbar. As reported by Windows Latest , those with the Windows 10 October 2020 Update or newer could soon start seeing pop-ups featuring the Edge logo. These explain how the feature lets users “Go straight to top sites,” and they can pin “favorite sites to quickly open tabs directly from the taskbar.” Progressive Web Apps provide an app-like experience customized for a device. IPOH: Ramadan bazaars are allowed in Perak, says state local government committee chairman Datuk Nolee Ashilin Mohamed Radzi. “Traders at the bazaars must strictly adhere to Covid-19 standard operating procedure. “All local councils will determine the locations for the bazaars and to ensure the SOP is followed, ” she said yesterday. Ipoh Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin said 25 locations in the city had been earmarked for the bazaars. “There will be 1,065 trading lots this year, with each to be placed about 3m apart. “Traders must wear face masks and gloves and are also required to get anti-typhoid jabs and attend food-handling courses, ” he said. At long last Apple has added public-transport directions to its Maps app - or at least it has revealed that it will add this feature when iOS 9 launches in September. (At time of writing the new feature is only available by downloading the pre-release beta version of iOS 9 , which is what we use throughout this tutorial.
