Works like Maus , Persepolis , and Fun Home have garnered Pulitzers, given birth to film and theater adaptations, topped best-seller lists, and elevated comics art from a disdained medium into an acclaimed one. But who, exactly, invented the graphic novel? Debates over its origins have raged ever since the term graphic novel first came into vogue in the late 1970s. But new research is bringing us closer to an answer. The origin of the graphic novel is a bit of a detective story, and a principal suspect is the man profiled in the upcoming book Will Eisner: Champion of the Graphic Novel , written by longtime comics writer, editor, historian, and former president of DC Comics Paul Levitz. Usually anything to do with the Avengers is a license to print money. But not in the case of Southeast Asia’s first Marvel Entertainment theme park. The park, constructed at the Mega Bangna Shopping Centre in south-east Bangkok, is going out of business after just seven months. Despite the fanfare when it opened in June 2018, the themed attraction didn’t seem to have met expectations, from poorly-managed operations, low-quality productions and expensive ticket prices. The Marvel Experience Thailand, a 20,000 square metre theme park which cost 1 billion baht to build is set to close on January 29. Entry prices were steep – 1,500 baht for adults and 1,350 baht for children. Mitski blessed us with a new track today, “The Baddy Man.” It’s the first single from her her forthcoming soundtrack to the graphic novel This Is Where We Fall by Chris Miskiewicz and Vincent Kings. The sci-fi series deals with science, faith, and that innately human belief in something bigger than ourselves. For us, that’s Mitski. Her voice booms over the track’s country-western flair as she warns about the Baddy Man “creeping and a-crawling.” “What those dead men say that they do / Will never be the absolute truth / ’Cause the Baddy Man is creeping through the alleys of your mind,” she croons over twangy strings. In 2020, Mitski dropped “Cop Car,” her first solo release since her 2018 album, Be the Cowboy .
