Daily Wildcat reporter Sasha Hartzell interviewed with University of Arizona President Dr. Robert Robbins. They talked about his plans for his first UA Homecoming, his career and how he plans to differentiate himself from past UA presidents. This is your first University of Arizona homecoming. How are you planning on celebrating it? I hear that I’m supposed to get up and go to some restaurant for breakfast at 6 a.m. And I can’t remember the name of the restaurant, but I’m told that that’s tradition. So I’m going to get up particularly early and try to enjoy it. It's one of the great traditions we have on campus. And of course I’m going to top it off by being down on the field when the final horn goes off and we win against Washington State. And that’ll be a good day. Will your family be attending? The PAC to end all PACs comes to UA
In a time of historic wealth inequality and a general election that saw record campaign spending , a new political organization is on a mission to drastically reduce the role of big money in politics and expand voting rights. Un-PAC , the self-proclaimed “PAC to end all PACs,” wants to bring democratic reform to the forefront of political discourse at college campuses across the country. According to an Un-PAC press release, its first initiative is to promote the passage of the For The People Act . “Un-PAC's first campaign is to pass H.R.1/S.1, the For The People Act during the 117th Congress, without letting the filibuster stand in their way,” the organization said. “Un-PAC is the first and only student organizing group in the country that is focusing specifically on democracy reform and this legislation.” The bill would require states to offer same-day voter registration in federal elections, establish election day as a federal holiday, expand opportunities to vote … [Read more...] about The PAC to end all PACs comes to UA
Ongoing debate in UA community about security cameras on campus
University of Arizona student, Forrest Keys, died during a shooting at the Cherry Avenue garage on Saturday, Feb. 20. A petition was made shortly after the shooting to install security cameras in all of the entrances and exits of garages on campus. The petition also wants to push for cameras on every level of the garages. The owner of the original petition took it down after it had received over 8,000 signatures. UA student Mia Sterenberg made a statement on the petition saying, “while there were good intentions with this petition, there are harsh realities that need to be addressed in our country and community. Specifically, how surveillance has been used as a tool of weaponization against the Black community.” The comment section turned into a debate of whether security cameras should be on campus or if they do more harm than good. Making friends in isolation: Perspectives from UA students
Socializing during the COVID-19 pandemic proved to be difficult for students in college over the last year. People were not able to engage in the usual social activities that occur on campus. In the past, attending class and joining clubs on campus were some of the easiest ways to make friends, but since most classes are taught via Zoom and clubs rarely meet in person, these go-to ways of making friends are no longer applicable. Prior to entering Phase 2 of the COVID-19 reentry plan, the University of Arizona limited all events to a maximum of 10 people inhibiting many clubs and organizations from doing anything in person.
