Let’s be real: Navigating the list of Oscar nominees represents a challenge this year, so I was intrigued by one filmmaker’s winning formula. “The key is to mix and match,” he advised. “I watch the characters trudge across Nomadland , then turn to Fred Astaire dancing in Top Hat . I move from Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom to Easter Parade .” The objective: “It’s the real vs. the unreal; I need them back-to-back to appreciate them. Or survive them.” His explanation may seem glib, but it reflects the escape mechanism adopted by some film devotees in coping with the isolation of the lockdown year – a re-excavation of Hollywood glitz. The current slate of nominees vividly reflects the themes of the moment — race, caste, sexual politics, immigration. It also embodies the angst-ridden mood of Hollywood. Actor Jordan Fisher is set to bolt into The CW ’s The Flash as Bart Allen — who many might know as Impulse, the fastest teenager on the planet. Fisher will step foot into the Arrowverse as a guest star. Bart Allen is the future son of Barry Allen and Iris West-Allen. Bart has a penchant for wildly impulsive behavior so Barry and Iris will definitely have their hands full trying to teach their new son patience. Barry and Iris may have their work cut out for them to wrangle Bart, but they will have to get it together if they want to stop Team Flash’s biggest threat. Fisher’s first appearances as the fan-favorite character of Impulse will also coincide with The Flash ‘s special 150th Episode, which is set to air this season on The CW. Multi-hyphenate Fisher is known for his producing, music, gaming, acting, dancing and using his voice to speak on racial injustices. Hollywood’s great re-awakening seems at hand. Sort of. The cameras are rolling, the theaters are opening, the wannabe blockbusters have nailed new playdates. Even Bob Iger last week revealed his exit date, marking his kingdom’s new era. But when the curtains rise, will the audience applaud? Paradoxically, I was reading a new book this week that posed a metaphor for the Hollywood moment. Titled Shooting Midnight Cowboy , the book by Glenn Frankel portrayed the shadow of doom hovering over a movie about to start shooting 50 years ago. Its young director, John Schlesinger, was semi-suicidal because the critics had just savaged his latest picture. With Cowboy , had he again chosen the wrong cast and the wrong setting? She keeps a list of men who’ve walked out on her. She’s OK with that. She also keeps a list of men who’ve aced her out of gigs. Lesley Stahl this week starts her 30th year as a top 60 Minutes correspondent, a role model for women who’ve not only survived but thrived in important sectors of the media business. With non-scripted television now springing back to life, it’s worth noting that that there’s still a show that dates back to 1968 – a lively variant from Pooch Perfect, Whac-A-Mole, Love Island or the other heavy artillery of Reality Week. The news business today arguably is run by women, both in front of the camera and behind — prime examples of the not-so-quiet revolution in the media world. A Covid survivor, Stahl, 80, got her first job thanks to the 1970s version of affirmative action. That meant apprentice-level opportunities working for alpha male ball breakers like Mike Wallace and Don Hewitt.
