Parents Who “Pranked” Their Kids On YouTube Have Lost Custody Of Two Children

The Maryland couple behind the viral YouTube "prank" channel DaddyOFive have lost temporary custody of two of their children after a recent "kids prank" video sparked outrage and allegations of child abuse in the YouTube community. The Frederick County Sheriff's Office on Friday took two of Mike and Heather Martin's children away to be placed in the temporary custody of their biological mother, Rose Hall, Maj. Tim Clarke of the sheriff's office told BuzzFeed News. Hall's attorney, Tim Conlon, said in a video Monday that the Frederick County Circuit Court had granted her an emergency order for temporary custody of Cody and Emma Martin "so that they'd be safe." "It was very heartbreaking and disturbing to see my kids being abused," Hall said in the video, adding that the children were doing good and "getting back to their playful selves." Mike and Heather Martin expressed remorse for their actions in a video last month. "This has been the absolute worst … [Read more...] about Parents Who “Pranked” Their Kids On YouTube Have Lost Custody Of Two Children

‘I’m a refugee, not useless’: In Malaysia, they who lost it all help uplift others

KUALA LUMPUR: Sitting in a circle, the women one by one took turns to read aloud from their notes. “I’ve been suffering since yesterday,” recited one lady in English. Suffering from a fever, a cold, a headache – they learnt to say a litany of symptoms. Basic though the conversation might be, without this they wouldn't be able to tell a doctor what was wrong with them, and get the right - or even any - treatment. A few words that made all the difference from total helplessness. The 18-year-old responsible for starting such classes? He was one of their own - that is to say, one of approximately 77,000 Rohingya refugees and asylum seekers in Malaysia. Mohamudul Hasson Roshid arrived in the country in 2016. Fresh off the boat after a harrowing journey from Bangladesh via Aceh, the teenager quickly set about looking to the needs of his fellow refugees who, unlike him, didn't have the advantage of knowing English. He co-founded the Rohingya Peace Institute as a school for … [Read more...] about ‘I’m a refugee, not useless’: In Malaysia, they who lost it all help uplift others

Parents Who Were Charged With Child Neglect For “Pranking” Their Kids On YouTube Are Still Making Videos With Their Children

A Maryland-based YouTube couple charged with child neglect for featuring “kids prank” videos that sparked allegations of child abuse are continuing to post content involving three of their children despite being on probation. Michael and Heather Martin lost custody of two of their youngest children and were sentenced to five years of probation on charges of child neglect in 2017. The couple was behind the popular DaddyOFive YouTube channel, which sparked widespread criticism and allegations of child abuse for its videos featuring the Martins “pranking” their five children. Some of the videos depicted the Martins yelling at their children until they cried, screaming obscenities, and — in one instance — shoving a child who then got a bloody nose. Two of the youngest children — then 10-year-old Cody and 11-year-old Emma — were the most frequent targets of the pranks and suffered “mental injury” as a result of the videos, according to psychological evaluations of … [Read more...] about Parents Who Were Charged With Child Neglect For “Pranking” Their Kids On YouTube Are Still Making Videos With Their Children

Trump’s legacy: Big policy changes that often got lost amid the din and scandal

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump may be best remembered for his use of Twitter as a bully pulpit to stoke controversy or browbeat opponents, but the noise his tweets generated often distracted from the big policy changes he made over his four-year term. During his rollercoaster presidency, the focus was often on what Trump was saying and not what on he was doing as he careened from one self-induced crisis to another. But a review of his policies shows that he had a real effect on people's lives in the areas of energy and environment, immigration, the judiciary, business and the economy, trade, and foreign policy, among others. CHINA The Trump administration put China’s rise in the spotlight and helped forge a bipartisan and increasingly adversarial US view of the world’s second-largest economy. From a raft of tariffs on billions of dollars of Chinese imports to sanctions against top officials and a muscular use of penalties against top Chinese companies like Huawei, ZTE, … [Read more...] about Trump’s legacy: Big policy changes that often got lost amid the din and scandal

Syria’s Children are Victims of Country’s Decade of War

As Syria approaches the 10-year mark in its civil war next month, the United Nations says the nation’s youngest generation is suffering most, as millions of children suffer malnourishment, stunted growth, and a lack of schooling. “More than half a million children under 5 in Syria suffer from stunting as a result of chronic malnutrition, according to our latest assessments,” U.N. Humanitarian Chief Mark Lowcock said Thursday in his monthly briefing to the Security Council on the situation. “We fear this number will increase,” he said. Lowcock said stunting is especially bad in the northwest and the northeast of the country, where data show that in some areas, up to one in three children suffers from impaired growth and development due to poor nutrition and recurrent illnesses. The effects of stunting are irreversible. Last week, Lowcock spoke with a group of Syrian doctors. At one pediatric hospital, the physicians said malnourished children occupy half of the facility’s 80 … [Read more...] about Syria’s Children are Victims of Country’s Decade of War
