LONDON: Formula One mechanics could take twice as long to change an engine under new measures to protect them from COVID-19 and reliability will be key, according to Racing Point technical director Andrew Green. The new protocols come into force when the season starts in Austria on Jul 5 and Green told reporters on Thursday (Jun 18) his team was coming to terms with the new reality of everything taking more time. The procedures restrict the number of mechanics and engineers working on the car together. Team members must also wear protective equipment such as masks. "It’s very different and it’s going to be a real challenge going forward," Green said after the team conducted a limited mileage test at Silverstone on Wednesday with Canadian Lance Stroll. Mercedes F1 engine head Cowell to step down
LONDON: Engine boss Andy Cowell, a key man in Mercedes' and Lewis Hamilton's Formula One success over the past six seasons, will stand down on July 1, the reigning champions announced on Monday. Mercedes said Cowell, managing director of Mercedes-AMG High-Performance Powertrains (HPP), would support the transition and consult "on a major future project" with Mercedes-Benz until early next year at least. "I have decided that now is the right time to move on from my role and seek a new engineering business challenge," Cowell, who has been with Mercedes for 16 years, said in a statement. Hywel Thomas will now take direct responsibility for the Formula One power unit. DETROIT (AP) — The U.S. government is investigating complaints of engine compartment fires in nearly 1.9 million Toyota RAV4 small SUVs.
