Apple’s News app in iOS 9: All the news that fits, they print?

When Apple unveiled the News app in the WWDC keynote on Monday, my first reaction was glee. As a past participant in its Newsstand experiment , which is probably the best way to describe it, the News app had several characteristics that made it seem far superior for many purposes. By the evening, though, gloom had set in. The News app looks more like yet another push news service--the latest incarnation of PointCast for those with long memories--that delivers what the product's producer thinks is valuable to you rather than what you necessarily want. It's sophisticated, but takes choice out of readers' hands. If a user can't choose any news source, whether a blog updated yearly and read by 10 people or a multinational media conglomerate's river of articles, I believe it's doomed to fall by the wayside. When presented with curation and choice, only a subset of people, the least avid, choose a walled garden unless the benefit is truly remarkable. Apple's choices will shape … [Read more...] about Apple’s News app in iOS 9: All the news that fits, they print?

3 don’t-miss deals from Amazon’s Certified Refurbished Sale

People sometimes ask me, "Rick, do you like refurbished electronics?" My response: "No. I love refurbished electronics!" This probably explains why I get invited to few parties. I really do love refurbished gear, though, especially when it's good as new but for a much lower price. Case in point: Amazon's Certified Refurbished sale has a handful of extra-good deals, three of which I've highlighted below. Here's where the love comes in: Each product here is inspected and tested to look and work like new. And each product is backed by a full one-year warranty, same as a new one. The only real difference is the packaging: refurbs typically come in non-descript brown boxes, not fancy, colorful retail ones. To my thinking that matters only if you're shopping for a gift for someone -- and even then it's not really a huge deal. (It's what's inside that counts, right?) Here are three don't-miss deals from today's sale. Certified Refurbished Echo Show 8 $70 (save $60) … [Read more...] about 3 don’t-miss deals from Amazon’s Certified Refurbished Sale

How GE help decarbonization in Vietnam?

Technology and utilizing operational benefits are the key factors enabling the multinational firm to serve dozens of power plants in Vietnam. Vietnam, with annual power demand growth of roughly 10%, requires significant improvements in energy efficiency, emission intensity together with national energy mix restructuring for low-carbon economic growth. Photo: GE Renewable Energy To make a transition towards greener economic growth, intensified investment in renewable energy become indispensable as energy intensity over the last decade was the only negative driver resulting in the slowdown of carbon emissions in the country. The broader engagement of GE in green energy in Vietnam has contributed partly to the country’s power transition as the US-based company now generates up to 30% of Vietnam’s power with a GE fleet of nearly 30 gas turbines, servicing over 10 power plants and projects. GE Spokesperson Som … [Read more...] about How GE help decarbonization in Vietnam?
