Three-year-old who survived fall from 12th floor discharged from Hanoi hospital

The little girl who was saved in a hair-raising fall from a building in Hanoi last month was discharged from the Vietnam National Children’s Hospital on Friday after five days of treatment. Doctor Hoang Hai Duc, head of pediatric orthopedics at the hospital, said the pelvis joint of H., the child patient in question, was fixed and is responding well to treatment, as suggested by X-ray images. A re-examination for the three-year-old toddler is slated for two or three weeks later. On Thursday, Duong Thi Minh Thu, head of the hospital's social work Ddepartment, visited and gave presents to the girl and checked on her family. The management board of the hospital also directed the department to provide support for the family during the girl’s next check-ups. On behalf of the family, H.’s mother expressed gratitude toward the treatment that her daughter had received. Around 5:30 pm on February 28, H. was seen climbing over the balcony on the 12th floor of the apartment building … [Read more...] about Three-year-old who survived fall from 12th floor discharged from Hanoi hospital

Shanghai to establish proton therapy center for children

Video Player Close SHANGHAI, March 5 (Xinhua) -- A Shanghai proton therapy center is expected to take the lead in providing treatment for Chinese children with cancer in about two years. The center will be jointly established by the Children's Hospital of Fudan University, Shanghai Fosun Healthcare (Group) Co., Ltd., and Mevion Medical Technology Group Limited, under an agreement signed this week. About 22,000 children are diagnosed with cancer every year in China. Surgery and chemotherapy are the main treatments. Proton therapy is a new type of radiation therapy that uses high-energy beams to treat tumors. Protons from hydrogen atoms are extracted and accelerated up to 70 percent of the speed of light. Its energy is concentrated directly on the tumors with minimal harm to surrounding healthy tissue. It causes fewer side effects on brain and spine growth in children compared with traditional treatments, said Dong Kuiran, a senior oncologist at the children's hospital. … [Read more...] about Shanghai to establish proton therapy center for children

A lost or more resilient generation? 6 ways Covid-19 changed childhood in Singapore

SINGAPORE - Once upon a time, Children's Day was a joyous celebration of childhood in Singapore, a day to treasure the innocence and exuberance of little ones. Children's Day on Friday, though, marks eight months of the toughest and strangest year for kids. They have had to grow up suddenly in the shadow of the pandemic, often with parents who were as scared and confused as they were. "I felt kind of trapped in a cage because we were just locked into this house for 12, 13 hours a day, and we could only go outside for a short time," recalls Yaash Kirpalani, 11, of the circuit breaker. Over the months, however, tantrums transformed into habit as kids learnt to wear masks every day, trepidation over Home-Based Learning (HBL) woes evolved into baby steps towards independent learning, and misery over social isolation changed to acceptance as they found new ways to connect. The Straits Times takes a look at how the Covid-19 crisis has shaped childhood in Singapore so far this year. … [Read more...] about A lost or more resilient generation? 6 ways Covid-19 changed childhood in Singapore

Pondering love and loss amid COVID at the Berlinale

The opening scenes of "Jole Dobe Na" — Bengali for "Those Who Do Not Drown" —  are apocalyptic. The camera moves slowly, visually documenting parts of an abandoned building, its doors and walls stripped of paint, until it reaches a large window that overlooks the courtyard. A man's voice says, "What if I told you, all this never happened. We are fine and we will be fine. [That] The whole catastrophe was a dream after all? They promised, science could do everything, cure the sick, bring Lazarus back to life…" Having lived most of the last year under COVID-induced lockdowns, these words seem to reflect our inability to grasp the "new normal" consisting of social distancing and isolation, and our collective vulnerability as humans. But "Jole" is not about the pandemic. Its actors managed to finish filming the movie shortly before the lockdown began and COVID-19 did not really influence the movie's storyline. But in the current global context, the story raises a couple of important … [Read more...] about Pondering love and loss amid COVID at the Berlinale
