Avesh impressively filling in for Ishant at DC

Ishant suffering from heel niggle, Delhi Capitals' Head Coach Ponting reveals. IMAGE: Rishabh Pant stole the limelight on Thursday when he had his arm around Avesh Khan's shoulder after the bowler was clobbered for two sixes. Avesh got a wicket off the very next ball. Photograph: IPL/Twitter Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting revealed on Thursday that pacer Ishant Sharma is suffering from a heel niggle. The 32-year-old, who was retained by Delhi ahead of the IPL auction, missed the games against Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, which paved the way for 24-year-old pacer Avesh Khan's selection in the team. "He (Avesh Khan) has been ultra-impressive, pretty much from the first day we arrived here for the training camp. Physically he looks a little bit better, he lost a little bit of weight from last season. He is definitely fitter and bowling faster. Without a little bit of extra fitness on his side, he is able to maintain his action better. His … [Read more...] about Avesh impressively filling in for Ishant at DC

Bundesliga: Hertha Berlin in quarantine as DFL issues COVID-19 warning

Bundesliga strugglers Hertha Berlin have become the first top-flight German team to be ordered to quarantine after two players and two staff members tested positive for coronavirus, potentially throwing the end-of-season fixture list into chaos. Hertha announced on Thursday morning that head coach Pal Dardai, assistant coach Admir Hamzagic and striker Dodi Lukebakio had tested positive, and that the team and staff would go into isolation, but still be able to train and play. But a fourth positive test, this time defender Marvin Plattenhardt, led to a mandatory 14-day quarantine. All four are said to be symptom-free. Hertha have applied to postpone their three upcoming fixtures against Mainz on Sunday, Freiburg on Wednesday and Schalke next Saturday but, with regulations stating that any further positive cases would see the 14-day quarantine period start from scratch again, further postponements could follow, leading to a fixture pile-up. "The same rules apply to Hertha as to … [Read more...] about Bundesliga: Hertha Berlin in quarantine as DFL issues COVID-19 warning

Patrick Marleau poised to break Gordie Howe’s games record

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Growing up on a farm as a hockey-loving kid in Saskatchewan, the knowledge that players like Gordie Howe had made the journey from that remote province to the NHL gave Patrick Marleau belief that he could one day follow that same path. Marleau has done far more than just make it to the NHL. Now nearly a quarter-century after leaving Saskatchewan to sign with the San Jose Sharks as a fresh-faced teenager, Marleau is set to eclipse Mr. Hockey’s all-time games played record in the NHL. Marleau has played in 1,765 career games and is poised to tie Howe’s mark of 1,767 on Saturday night in Minnesota and break it two nights later in Las Vegas. “Just first and foremost is loving the game and I just love being out there and playing,” Marleau said Thursday about what has kept him gong all these years. “Obviously, every kid’s dream is to hoist that Stanley Cup, so I’ve been chasing it all this time and that goal hasn’t changed for me, since you know what the Stanley … [Read more...] about Patrick Marleau poised to break Gordie Howe’s games record

Panarin, Shesterkin lead Rangers to 4-0 win over Devils

NEW YORK - Artemi Panarin had two goals and an assist, Igor Shesterkin got his second straight shutout, and the New York Rangers beat the New Jersey Devils 4-0 Thursday night. Jacob Trouba and Ryan Lindgren also scored to help New York win for the sixth time in nine games (6-1-2). Colin Blackwell had a career-high three assists and Ryan Strome added two. “Igor’s been great for us,” Blackwell said. “He really kept us in that game. They had a couple of chances, a couple of flurries where they kind of pressed the ice toward us and he made some big saves.“ Shesterkin finished with 16 saves for his second NHL shutout — and second in three days against the Devils. He had 27 saves in a 3-0 win at New Jersey on Tuesday night. In this one, he had to make three saves in the first, nine in the second and four in the third. The Rangers also blocked 20 shots in front of him. “Indeed there was not much work in this one,” Shesterkin said through a translator. “Guys did a great job, they … [Read more...] about Panarin, Shesterkin lead Rangers to 4-0 win over Devils
