The Big Read: As Singaporeans pine for a return to normalcy, COVID-19 has left behind a trail of despair for some

SINGAPORE: It first started with a ban on travellers coming in from China. Within weeks, Singapore closed its borders and imposed stay-home or quarantine orders on all residents returning to the country. Amid all these, the risk assessment level known as Disease Outbreak Response System Condition (DORSCON) was raised from yellow to orange, religious services were suspended and mass entertainment events were banned. Then came the circuit breaker on Apr 7, which practically brought almost the entire country to a standstill, as schools, offices and non-essential businesses were closed, and restrictions placed on residents’ movements around the island. Daily life was upended, with people not being allowed to dine-in at food establishments or meet up with friends or family members from different households, and having to study and work from home. Such disruptive changes have been a constant in Singapore, as in other countries, since COVID-19 first surfaced here on Jan 23. Less … [Read more...] about The Big Read: As Singaporeans pine for a return to normalcy, COVID-19 has left behind a trail of despair for some

COVID-19 adds to frustration of displaced families in battle-scarred Marawi

MARAWI, Philippines: The emerald green pastures embracing her community betrayed the harsh realities of life there. Single mother Nadjera Nasser lined up with her four children to fetch water that is supplied to their neighbourhood only twice a week. Her stomach, she said, had been rumbling. It was, after all, already the tail end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. "(Fetching water is) difficult, tiring, hunger-inducing. We’re hungry. It’s also sunny, right? I carry the water containers on my own and line up even if I’m fasting," she told CNA. Water, a resource many others take for granted, is hard to come by in this area. "The kids are affected. They can’t bathe every day," she added. Every drop counts for her children's hygiene. But even as she waits for her turn, this long queue for water is not nearly as burdensome as her life's primary wait. It has been three years since she was forced to leave her old home as militants linked to Islamic State took … [Read more...] about COVID-19 adds to frustration of displaced families in battle-scarred Marawi

RS Charts: Morgan Wallen’s ‘Dangerous’ Continues at Number One

Morgan Wallen ’s Dangerous: The Double Album spent a seventh week at Number One on the Rolling Stone Top 200 Albums chart, extending the record for the most consecutive weeks at Number One for a country album. The singer sold 5,600 copies of his 30-song set and earned 96.5 million streams. His reign at Number One has not faced a serious challenge all year. Even after a video emerged of Wallen using a racial slur , causing some sectors of the music industry to withdraw support for the singer, Dangerous continues to dominate the RS 200. The only other recent releases to hold strong in the Top Ten were Lil Durk ’s The Voice — which originally dropped Christmas Eve, and then received the deluxe treatment in January — and Pooh Shiesty’s Shiesty Season, at Numbers Four and Six, respectively. BTS’s BE leaps to Number Seven after the release of BE: Essential Edition. Golf: Flurry of birdies gives Varner early second-round lead

REUTERS: Harold Varner III opened with a triple bogey and closed with a flurry of five birdies over his last six holes to surge into the early second-round lead at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas on Friday. Playing the back nine first at the spectatorless Colonial Country Club, Varner got his day off to a horrific start with a triple at the par four 10th but hit back with birdies at 12, 13 and 16 to return to level par. He wobbled into the turn with a bogey at 18 but then jumped to the top of the leaderboard behind a run of four straight birdies from the fourth and another at his last for a four-under 66 and get to 11-under for the tournament. Lurking one shot back is local favourite Jordan Spieth, who had his own troubles mid-round before recovering for a five-under 65. Also playing the back nine first, Spieth, who began the day two shots off the lead, rocketed to the top of the leaderboard with six birdies through his opening 11 holes but then crashed out … [Read more...] about Golf: Flurry of birdies gives Varner early second-round lead

More time with the fish: Behind the scenes at the SEA Aquarium during the circuit breaker

SINGAPORE: The halls are dark and the viewing gallery silent, but in the blue of the Open Ocean Habitat, the rays are in a fever, unconcerned that the crowds and flashing cameras are currently not part of their daily routine. Stingrays the size of dinner tables crowd around aquarist Wendy Yam. Smaller cownose rays nuzzle her hopefully as she hand-feeds them fish and squid from a tub full of sashimi-grade seafood. On a normal day, the smushed faces of children and a thicket of selfie sticks would line the tank’s glass panel, but today, one camera – a video journalist’s – captures the feeding frenzy. In the midst of Singapore’s “circuit breaker”, the SEA Aquarium at Resorts World Sentosa has been closed to the public since Apr 7, but aquarists such as Wendy are still working and diving. They’re not your typical essential worker, but to the marine creatures, they’re indispensable. “Sometimes when we dive in the exhibits and you look through the acrylic panels it looks quite … [Read more...] about More time with the fish: Behind the scenes at the SEA Aquarium during the circuit breaker
