There aren’t many heroes in the latest saga rocking the Democratic Party, but plenty of villains seem to be involved, and Indonesia's democracy is certainly worse off because of the drama. A hostile takeover of a political party’s leadership, with a government official at the helm, certainly takes political chicanery to a whole new level, even by Indonesian standards. But we’ll get to that in a minute. The incumbent leaders of the Democratic Party, chairman Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono and the chairman of the party’s supreme council, former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, painted themselves as the victim of a hostile takeover and their effort to save the party from outside interference as the fight to defend the country’s democracy. That battle cry could easily ring true and democracy defenders could rally around the Democratic Party — if only the call was not made by the current party chairman and Yudhoyono’s political scion, Agus. The Democratic Party, despite its name, has … [Read more...] about No heroes or villains in Democratic Party’s latest saga

Josh Hawley Says Democrats Making American Workers ‘Compete With Slave Labor’
Missouri Republican Senator Josh Hawley accused Democrats of working alongside U.S. corporations to force American workers to "compete with slave labor" abroad. Hawley, speaking with Fox News Friday evening, was asked how the "new GOP" can appeal to minority voters across the country and "how conservatives can win the war of ideas." Hawley and host Lawrence Jones touted former President Donald Trump as "the man" for receiving votes from the "most racially diverse" voting base of any Republican president since 1960—but they both blasted the Republican Party itself for not doing enough to appeal to working class voters of all racial backgrounds. Jones pressed Hawley to explain why the GOP didn't do more to expand its voting base in Georgia, where it lost both Senate seats to Democrats, largely due to minority voters. Hawley went on to accuse Democrats of working hand-in-hand with large corporations to force American workers to compete with overseas workers he described as … [Read more...] about Josh Hawley Says Democrats Making American Workers ‘Compete With Slave Labor’
Demoractic party swims against tide, supports PDI-P as House leader
Many House of Representatives factions have expressed opposition to the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) taking the leadership position at the House, but the Democratic Party has swum against the tide and welcomed the bid. Democratic Party lawmaker Khatibul Umam Wiranu argued that the PDI-P deserved the position for securing the largest number of votes during the legislative election in 2014. “For this reason, the Democratic Party endorses only one additional article in order to allow the PDI-P to be granted the chairmanship seats,” Khatibul said. “This is to restrict deliberations from having to accommodate more demands from other factions.” The Democratic Party currently holds a deputy speaker position both at the House and the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) as part of the result of political lobbying with members of the then Red-and-White coalition that scrapped the proportional mechanism. The proportional mechanism grants leadership positions at the … [Read more...] about Demoractic party swims against tide, supports PDI-P as House leader
Progressives’ majority delusions politically costly
It’s been 20 years since the vice president turned a 50-50 partisan deadlock into a majority — and that condition didn’t last long. Within five months, Republican Jim Jeffords , deciding that the GOP was out of step with him ideologically, defected to the Democrats. If the Democrats aren’t careful, West Virginia’s moderate Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin Joseph (Joe) Manchin Sunday shows preview: Manchin makes the rounds after pivotal role in coronavirus relief debate Biden takes victory lap after Senate passes coronavirus relief package Schumer insists Democrats unified after chaotic coronavirus debate MORE could easily pull a “Jeffords,” leaving progressives in a spluttering rage — an impotent, spluttering rage, that is. Ever since their narrow, Trump-assisted double win in the U.S. Senate runoffs in Georgia, national Democrats — and progressives in particular — have been drunk on power they don’t have. Rather than taking a sober, realistic view, the … [Read more...] about Progressives’ majority delusions politically costly
Politician from Merkel’s Party Resigns over Profiting from Mask Contracts
BERLIN (AP) – A lawmaker with German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party said Sunday he will give up his seat in parliament and leave politics after it emerged that his company profited from deals to procure masks early in the pandemic — drawing sharp criticism in an election year. Nikolas Loebel, a backbench lawmaker with Merkel’s centre-right Christian Democratic Union, was blasted by members of his own party and opponents after it emerged Friday that a company he runs earned commissions of 250,000 euros ($298,000) from brokering contracts to buy masks. Saying that he should have been “more sensitive,” Loebel admitted that he had made a mistake and gave up his seat on parliament’s foreign affairs committee. That wasn’t enough for critics — particularly as his home state of Baden-Wuerttemberg elects a new regional legislature on March 14. A national election in which Germans will choose a new parliament, and determine who succeeds Merkel, follows on Sept. 26. Susanne Eisenmann, … [Read more...] about Politician from Merkel’s Party Resigns over Profiting from Mask Contracts
