BRUSSELS: Fifteen former presidents and premiers of European Union states have called on the European Commission to ensure democratic safeguards are included in new rules targeting Facebook, Google and Apple. In a letter sent to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday, the ex-leaders join a growing chorus of alarm about the power of U.S. tech giants, which has prompted authorities worldwide to launch investigations or new rules. The former leaders are from Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Finland, the Netherlands, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain as well as the former head of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy. European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager will announce two sets of draft rules known as the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the Digital Markets Act (DMA) on Dec. 15. The companies being targeted by the new EU rules have responded by saying they should be proportionate and balanced and not … [Read more...] about Former EU leaders call for democratic safeguards in new tech rules

Miss airline food? Finnair selling business class meals in supermarket
HELSINKI: Finland's national carrier Finnair has started selling its business class meals in a supermarket to prevent job cuts at its catering unit due to COVID-19. The airplane meals have quickly turned into a hit with 1,600 meals sold within days at the supermarket located near Finnair's main hub the Helsinki-Vantaa airport, Finnair said. It plans to sell in more outlets. "There are redundancies and layoffs going on already at Finnair and we are trying our best to find new innovative ways," head of Finnair Kitchen Marika Nieminen told Reuters. Finnair said last Tuesday it would cut around 700 jobs by March 2021. Finnair Kitchen's first main courses on the ground, for 12.9 euros (US$15.2) apiece, comprise beef with teriyaki-radish sauce served with grilled spring onion and rice or smoked arctic char with chantarelle risotto. "In this desperate remote work environment this is a small, nice taste of normal life," Mika, a customer from Vantaa said. In 2017, Finnair … [Read more...] about Miss airline food? COVID and ice hockey: outbreaks chill Nordic national pastime
GOTHENBURG, Sweden: Health authorities in Sweden and Finland are looking into a series of COVID-19 outbreaks on ice hockey teams that are believed to be one of the drivers of a sharp increase in new cases in the two hockey-loving countries. The day after Swedish ice hockey team BIK Karlskoga defeated Vasteras in a game in late September, one of its players complained of a fever. Three days later, half of Karlskoga's players and staff had tested positive for COVID-19 along with six players on Vasteras. "I felt the earth shake beneath my feet when we got the results back. I thought maybe three or four players were infected and that it would be enough to isolate them," BIK Karlskoga manager Torsten Yngveson told Reuters. The club shut down completely for two weeks, disrupting preparations just as the hockey season was kicking into full swing. All the players and staff have since recovered. The two Nordic countries are now jointly investigating why hockey teams appear more … [Read more...] about COVID and ice hockey: outbreaks chill Nordic national pastime

Europe’s top sides handed straightforward routes to Qatar
ZURICH: England were pitted against old rivals Poland in their World Cup qualifying group on Monday after a draw which left Europe's top sides with apparently straightforward routes to the 2022 tournament in Qatar. Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, Croatia and England all avoided each other thanks to the seeding system and, barring major upsets, should qualify comfortably for the tournament in Qatar. Instead, the main excitement is likely to be the scramble among the middle-ranking teams to finish second in their groups and qualify for the play-offs. Under a revised format, the 10 group winners qualify directly for Qatar while the runners-up go into a play-off system along with the best two teams from the Nations League, a separate competition. Those 12 teams will be divided into three paths of four, with the winners of each also going to Qatar. The group stage will be played between March and November next year with the play-offs in March … [Read more...] about Europe’s top sides handed straightforward routes to Qatar
