The Burden of Community Violence

Source: Serge van Neck/Unsplash On Wednesday, Feb 17, 2021, eight people were injured in a mass shooting that took place in broad daylight at the mass transportation hub in my neighborhood. It happened at the station where my family and I would normally take the subway to go downtown. Fortunately, my loved ones and I were not there at the time, but we could easily have been. This particular shooting has had an especially rattling effect on me because I have lived through too many similar events. In August 2019, five people were gunned down in broad daylight during a drive-by shooting two blocks from my home. In June 2019, I was in a subway when a gunfight broke out in the next train car. In September 2018, I was at home one evening when a three-way gun battle took place right outside my house. When the police arrived, they sealed us inside our home and I watched from a window as they counted over 40 bullets. In addition, along the paths I walk to the subway and supermarket are … [Read more...] about The Burden of Community Violence

Nobel-winning UN food agency warns of ‘hunger pandemic’ worse than COVID-19

OSLO: Accepting the Nobel Peace Prize in a ceremony held online because of the coronavirus, the World Food Programme (WFP) warned on Thursday (Dec 10) of a "hunger pandemic" it said could be worse than COVID-19. "Because of so many wars, climate change, the widespread use of hunger as a political and military weapon, and a global health pandemic that makes all of that exponentially worse, 270 million people are marching toward starvation," WFP executive director David Beasley said. "Failure to address their needs will cause a hunger pandemic which will dwarf the impact of COVID-19," he said, removing his face mask to make his remarks broadcast from the WFP's headquarters in Rome. The largest humanitarian organisation fighting famine, the UN agency founded in 1961 feeds tens of millions of people each year - 97 million in 2019 - across all continents. The WFP was honoured with the Nobel for its efforts "to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict", … [Read more...] about Nobel-winning UN food agency warns of ‘hunger pandemic’ worse than COVID-19

US$6.8 billion needed over next 6 months to avert famine: World Food Programme

LONDON: The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) will need to raise US$6.8 billion over the next six months to avert famine amid the COVID-19 crisis, the agency said on Tuesday (Oct 13). The WFP, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize last week for its efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict, said it had so far raised US$1.6 billion. "We've got a lot more money to raise to make certain we avert famine," David Beasley, executive director of the WFP, said at a conference organised by the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Beasley noted that 7 million people had died from hunger this year as the COVID-19 pandemic, which could double hunger worldwide, claimed a further 1 million lives. "If we don't sort out COVID, (the) hunger death rate could be three, four, five times that," said Beasley. ‘Whatever it takes’: Nightlife venues keen on reopening grapple with strict COVID-19 rules

SINGAPORE: Nightlife venues that have expressed interest in reopening under a newly announced pilot programme have said that they will do "whatever it takes" to create a safe environment for customers, but are concerned about the impact of strict COVID-19 rules - including mandatory pre-event testing - on costs. At least three karaoke chains have applied to take part in a pilot programme that will allow them to reopen for three months. But there are other nightlife businesses that are giving this new scheme a miss as they have decided either to pivot or call it quits after being battered by losses during the pandemic. The reopening trial for a small number of nightlife venues was announced by the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Home Affairs earlier this month. It is expected to begin with 25 participants – namely 10 pubs and bars, 10 karaoke establishments and five nightclubs. Pubs and bars will have a two-month trial starting from December, while the … [Read more...] about ‘Whatever it takes’: Nightlife venues keen on reopening grapple with strict COVID-19 rules

Griezmann hopes Juve defeat awakens drowsy Barca

BARCELONA: Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann believes his side's 3-0 defeat by Juventus in the Champions League could be just what his stuttering team needs to knock them back into shape. The loss followed Saturday's shock defeat by Cadiz and meant Barca failed to finish top of their group for the first time in 13 seasons and will be unseeded for the last-16 draw. But Griezmann hopes it serves as a wake up call to his side, who have made their worst start to a league campaign in 33 years. "This is a tough blow but it will serve us well to put everything in perspective and wake us up," Griezmann said. "This can also show us that every game is important." Barca's terrible run of results has left coach Ronald Koeman exposed but Griezmann said the only people who could be blamed for the team's predicament was the players. Barca host Levante on Sunday hoping to eat into their 12-point deficit on La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid, who face champions Real Madrid. "Who … [Read more...] about Griezmann hopes Juve defeat awakens drowsy Barca
