President Biden has set the ambitious, important climate goal of achieving net zero emissions from the nation’s electric power sector by 2035. Already, natural gas has played a key role in lowering U.S. carbon dioxide emissions in the past 15 years, in part by displacing higher emitting coal. But gas, which still provides more than a third of America’s electricity, must play an even greater part in America’s decarbonization plans going forward. Right now, gas uniquely supports the expansion of renewable energy by providing an instantly dispatchable source of electricity. Unlike coal and nuclear plants, natural gas power plants turn on and off within minutes, allowing the grid to quickly match supply and demand even when the wind isn’t blowing and the sun isn’t shining. As a U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory report has noted, this unique flexibility of natural gas generation thereby facilitates the steady expansion of renewables. Yet as we move toward … [Read more...] about Natural gas and America’s clean energy transition

China should speed nuclear development to meet carbon goals – legislators
SHANGHAI: China should accelerate development of nuclear power to help meet Beijing's pledges to bring greenhouse gas emissions to a peak before 2030 and become "carbon neutral" by 2060, according to industry delegates at the annual session of parliament. China said in its 2021-2025 five-year plan released on Friday that it would raise total nuclear capacity to 70 gigawatts (GW) by the end of 2025. Capacity reached 51 GW at the end of last year, falling short of its 58 GW target. But Luo Qi, an expert with China's Atomic Energy Research Institute and member of parliament's advisory second chamber, warned that current targets did not match the country's climate ambitions, and construction should be stepped up. "By 2035, nuclear plants in operation should reach around 180 gigawatts, amounting to 5% of total capacity," he said in a proposal published by the state-owned China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC). Gu Jun, CNNC's president and member of the National … [Read more...] about China should speed nuclear development to meet carbon goals – legislators
5 Common Myths About PTSD
As a nation simultaneously struggling with a healthcare pandemic, an economic crisis, and significant social justice issues, heightened levels of anxiety and stress have become the norm. That’s why now is a critical time to gain a better understanding of PTSD —and how to recognize its symptoms in ourselves and those around us. As with many emotional and mental disorders, PTSD can come with a stigma that can itself be dangerous, as stigma can cause sufferers to keep quiet and avoid getting help. These stigmas are fueled by misinformation in American discourse, and it’s high time to debunk some of the most common among them. Myth 1: PTSD is an invisible disease that is all in someone’s head. False. The absence of visible symptoms makes PTSD hard to see with the naked eye. The invisible wound can make it hard for family and friends to believe it’s real, especially if the sufferer hasn’t personally experienced a violent or traumatic event. While it’s true that you … [Read more...] about 5 Common Myths About PTSD
