FRANKFURT: Morgan Stanley is planning to shift around €100 billion (US$121 billion) in assets to Frankfurt from Britain next year as a consequence of Brexit, a person with knowledge of the matter said on Thursday (Dec 10). Frankfurt's banking scene has been one of the primary beneficiaries of Britain's exit from the European Union as many big global banks chose Germany's financial capital to house staff and assets. Dozens of financial institutions have applied for licenses in Germany. The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal planning, said that the volume of assets slated for transfer was a rough estimate and would likely be moved in the first quarter of next year. Britain and the European Union are currently in discussions to hammer out a post-Brexit trade deal. Banks that have increased their presence in Frankfurt include Citigroup, JPMorgan, Standard Chartered and Goldman Sachs . Football: Germany’s Loew has achieved major targets since 2019 says DFB
FRANKFURT, Germany: Germany coach Joachim Loew, under fire after a 6-0 loss to Spain in the Nations League last month, achieved most major goals set in 2019 and has the support of the German Football Association (DFB), national team director Oliver Bierhoff said on Friday (Dec 4). During a virtual news conference after a DFB board meeting, Bierhoff defended the 60-year-old coach, in charge since 2006, and his changes to the team in the past two years. Bierhoff said Germany had reached next year's Euros, were in the highest Pot 1 for Monday's 2022 World Cup qualifying draw and had also stayed in the top section in the Nations League. "These three major targets were met," Bierhoff said, adding that the national team's overhaul had progressed only in small steps due to the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting games, training and match scheduling. In a 35-minute speech, using graphs, statistics and other performance data, Bierhoff highlighted what he said were the … [Read more...] about Football: Germany’s Loew has achieved major targets since 2019 says DFB

BERLIN: Germany will probably have to stick with measures to dampen the coronavirus pandemic into January, Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday (Nov 26), while her chief of staff suggested that restrictions might be needed until March. "Given the high number of infections, we assume that the restrictions which are in place before Christmas will continue to be valid until the start of January, certainly for most parts of Germany," Merkel told parliament. Merkel agreed with leaders of Germany's 16 federal states late on Wednesday to extend and tighten the coronavirus lockdown until Dec 20, but ease rules over the Christmas holidays to let families and friends celebrate together.
