NDR 2018: ‘Merdeka Generation’ healthcare package for Singaporeans born in ’50s

SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Sunday (Aug 19) announced a Merdeka Generation Package to help with the medical expenses of some 500,000 Singaporeans born in the 1950s. Speaking at the 2018 National Day Rally, he said details will be announced next year but the package – to be implemented using “a significant sum” - will include the likes of outpatient subsidies, Medisave top ups, premium subsidies for the MediShield Life insurance scheme and payouts for long term care. These are similar areas covered by the S$8 billion Pioneer Generation Package (PGP) launched in 2014 to assist with healthcare costs. So far more than S$1.3 billion has been spent on the PGP to help approximately 450,000 of these “pioneers”, said PM Lee. “We have taken special care of elderly Singaporeans,” he added. “When we introduced the PGP, we knew that Singaporeans a little younger than the pioneers would just miss out ... We have not forgotten this group.” For this generation, … [Read more...] about NDR 2018: ‘Merdeka Generation’ healthcare package for Singaporeans born in ’50s

Tennis: Osaka aims to inspire new generation – but says Williams is still the queen

MELBOURNE: Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka said she felt comfortable being a role model for the next generation after her fourth Grand Slam victory solidified her position at the forefront of a new era for tennis. But the Japanese star, a four-time major-winner at the age of just 23, insisted America's Serena Williams, 39 - who has 23 Slam crowns - remains the face of the women's game. Osaka beat America's Jennifer Brady 6-4, 6-3 in the Australian Open final on Saturday (Feb 20) to win her fourth Slam from the last eight in which she has played, and extend her year-plus winning streak to 21 matches. She joins Monica Seles and Roger Federer in winning her first four major finals, and will move up to second in the world rankings. Her sweeping triumph was viewed as heralding a shift in women's tennis with Australia's Fed Cup captain Alicia Molik declaring it a "changing of the guard", while the New Yorker said Osaka was the "most thrilling athlete of her generation". … [Read more...] about Tennis: Osaka aims to inspire new generation – but says Williams is still the queen

Olympics: Trump signs US reform bill into law after Nassar abuse scandal

REUTERS: U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday signed into law a bill designed to give Olympic athletes greater protection and more input into decision making in the wake of the Larry Nassar gymnastics sexual abuse scandal. The Empowering Olympic, Paralympic and Amateur Athletes Act increases funding for the U.S. Center for SafeSport and creates more athlete representation on the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) board and sport National Governing Bodies (NGB). If both fail to follow up on reforms, new mechanisms will be in place to allow Congress to dissolve the USOPC board and decertify NGBs. USA Gymnastics is still reeling from the scandal that involved former team doctor Nassar, who was sentenced to up to 300 years in prison in 2018 after more than 350 women testified about abuse at his hands. The bill followed an 18-month bipartisan investigation that found Nassar was able to assault hundreds of girls and women because of a lack of transparency and … [Read more...] about Olympics: Trump signs US reform bill into law after Nassar abuse scandal
