Facebook has decided to shut down Facebook Deals , its four-month-old Groupon competitor. "After testing Deals for four months, we've decided to end our Deals product in the coming weeks," Facebook told Reuters in a statement . The product, which launched in late April, was an attempt to bring the popular daily deals phenomenon to Facebook's 750+ million users. It launched in San Francisco, Austin, Dallas, Atlanta and San Diego, but quickly rolled out to other cities . The market for daily deals has become more competitive in recent months, however, and many are questioning the entire business model in light of Groupon's questionable financials . "We think there is a lot of power in a social approach to driving people into local businesses," Facebook said in its statement. "We've learned a lot from our test and we'll continue to evaluate how to best serve local businesses." We have reached out to Facebook for more information. … [Read more...] about Facebook Kills Off Deals, Its Groupon Competitor

Woman endures bitter 16-month legal battle after Mother’s Day present goes wrong
A mum has been locked in a 16-month legal battle after a Mother's Day present blunder. Elaine Webster has been landed with a £255 fine and lengthy court proceedings after going for afternoon tea with her sister last year. Her daughter Nadine bought her a Groupon voucher at the Humber View Hotel as a Mother's Day present. Elaine and sister Terri pulled up in "torrential rain" outside the hotel at just after 3pm on June 2, 2019. After seeing a "patrons only" sign in the car park, both women headed quickly inside, Hull Live reports. She said she was not aware that she had to register her vehicle registration number with the hotel to qualify for the free parking outside the hotel. Two weeks later, she received a £100 fine from ParkingEye, the company operating the car park outside the hotel. "To start with I saw the fine and just thought I could ring the hotel and they'd liaise with ParkingEye and that would be the end of it," she said. "But they said I'd have to get hold of … [Read more...] about Woman endures bitter 16-month legal battle after Mother’s Day present goes wrong

Our addiction to clothes is the latest target for eco-warriors, but no one wants to kill an industry worth £32bn. With London Fashion Week in full swing: Meet the first females of fashion taking the guilt out of shopping
No matter how often it’s repeated, it’s still astonishing. The global fashion industry —specifically, textile production — contributes more to climate change than international aviation and shipping combined, producing an estimated 1.2 billion tons of CO2 a year. That was the shocking conclusion of a UK parliamentary report into fashion’s giant carbon footprint last year. As models sashay down the catwalks this week and champagne corks pop, you might think the fashion world has its head in the sand. In fact, it is gripped by a sense of crisis and guilt. And while London plays host to fashion’s big party, its leading lights are working hard behind the scenes to clean up the industry’s act. UK-based female leaders within the fashion industry revealed how their brands are attempting to go green, including British Vogue's publisher Vanessa Kingori MBE (pictured) They face an obvious dilemma. The industry is worth £32 billion to the UK economy and employs 890,000 … [Read more...] about Our addiction to clothes is the latest target for eco-warriors, but no one wants to kill an industry worth £32bn. Russian billionaire unveils big plan to build tiny interstellar spacecraft
Russian internet billionaire Yuri Milner today proposed making a genuine journey to the stars: a program to develop a tiny spacecraft, weighing less than a gram, and propel it across nearly 40 trillion kilometers of space to the nearest star to study any planets there. Instead of a futuristic propulsion system, the “nanocraft” will “leave their fuel behind,” Milner told a press conference in New York City this afternoon. The craft will have a solar sail, a few meters across and weighing a few grams. Powerful Earth-based lasers would boost the craft, which would be waiting in Earth's orbit, with an acceleration of 60,000 g for a few minutes to reach 20% of the speed of light—fast enough to reach Alpha Centauri in 20 years. “It’s the first time in human history that we can do more than just stare at the stars,” Milner said. Milner, who made a fortune investing in fast-growing internet companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Spotify, and Groupon, has a track record of funding far-out … [Read more...] about Russian billionaire unveils big plan to build tiny interstellar spacecraft
