The idle mind is the devil’s workshop, as they say, and with many people in self-isolation getting increasingly restless, it was just a matter of time before the latest Instagram challenge would pop up. If you’ve been scrolling through your Instagram feed and have been perplexed by the various unflattering or embarrassing photos of your friends that show up seemingly randomly, what they’re doing is participating in the Until Tomorrow Challenge. It entails posting an older, bad-looking photo of yourself on Instagram and leaving it up for the next 24 hours. Most people tend to use Instagram Stories because they’re automatically removed after 24 hours, but if you’re brave enough to leave it on your profile, why not? Whoever likes a photo that’s been hashtagged #untiltomorrow has to take part in the challenge, and will have to post their own “unglam” photos. It’s all for a bit of fun, and doesn’t have any hidden meaning behind it, so don’t overthink it and give it a shot – if you … [Read more...] about Why are people posting unflattering images of themselves on Instagram?

Stoke fine McClean for ‘inappropriate’ Instagram post
REUTERS: Stoke City have fined midfielder James McClean two weeks' wages for posting an "inappropriate" picture on social media, the Championship club said on Friday. The Instagram post showed the Irishman wearing a balaclava, which has strong connotations with the Irish Republican Army (IRA). The image showed him with his children and featured a message that said he was teaching them a "history lesson". "I never wanted to cause any offence but I now realise that I did so and for that I apologise unreservedly," McClean, 30, said in a statement. "I have spoken to the club and will be deleting my Instagram account." The Irishman has been previously targeted by opposing fans and on social media for refusing to wear a Remembrance Day poppy. McClean comes from Derry in Northern Ireland, the location of the 1972 Bloody Sunday massacre, when British soldiers killed unarmed Catholic civil rights marchers. McClean was recovering from a knee injury when the soccer season was … [Read more...] about Stoke fine McClean for ‘inappropriate’ Instagram post
Instagram unveils new shared video feature to ease isolation
Instagram unveiled a new feature Tuesday (Mar 24) allowing users to connect more easily over video and shared content as part of a move to ease isolation stemming from the coronavirus pandemic. The Facebook-owned image-centric social network also announced new efforts to promote reliable content about the outbreak and stop the spread of misinformation Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, told journalists the new "co-watching" feature allows people to connect around online content while video chatting. This is becoming more important with many people around the world cut off from friends and family due to "shelter in place" orders. "We can play a role in helping to sort of combat that loneliness," he said. The service with more than one billion users worldwide also announced it would ramp up efforts to deliver verified information and stamp out hoaxes. Mosseri said the company is not seeing a coordinated misinformation effort but "bad advice," and unproven remedies. As a … [Read more...] about Instagram unveils new shared video feature to ease isolation

Commentary: Instagram tests hiding likes but this won’t bring back happiness
SINGAPORE: In the movie, Avengers: Endgame, the villain, Thanos, wipes out half of the entire population with a snap of his fingers. He thinks all problems of the universe stem from over-crowding and decides to save the world from itself. Although Thanos turns half of the population to dust, he doesn’t succeed in magically making the universe a better place. People instead suffer even more. This isn’t a movie review, so don’t worry about spoilers. But what I’m about to tell you may kill your joy of using Instagram and social media. Instagram has recently tested out hiding the number of likes on each post from some users in Canada, with this magic number visible only to account owners. Doing so, it hopes, would help its users enjoy sharing photos and videos, without feeling the pressure to gain popularity through chasing after a high number of likes. Many social media influencers strive to receive more likes, reactions and comments, which have become status symbols on … [Read more...] about Commentary: Instagram tests hiding likes but this won’t bring back happiness
