That is, until a few of them made their way onto DVDs as bonus material. Photo-Illustration: by Vulture; Photo by Paramount Pictures Considering the vast combination of elements that have to come together in just the right way — the right script, the right director, the right actors, the right production team, the right crew — it’s sort of a miracle that so many films are watchable, let alone great. The entire process of making a movie is a delicate high-wire collaboration between individual voices, and any number of small mistakes can ruin that balance. It’s partly why so many filmmaking teams (and, more recently, cohorts of studio executives) fixate relentlessly on arriving at the proper ending. A perfectly constructed conclusion can solidify a great movie or make a weak one seem stronger ; meanwhile, a bad finale can throw the work of a small nation of co-conspirators into complete chaos. Film history is full of tales of great movies saved from ruin by a reworked resolution, … [Read more...] about A Brief History of the Alternate Movie Endings Lost to Time

How the Breakout Star of the Impeachment Hearings Managed to Keep His Faith in Democracy
Rep. Joe Neguse, a young Democrat from Colorado, rose to speak, full of an unfailing faith in American democracy. This moment was set to be one of the most important of his short career so far in Congress. At age 36, Neguse had only just been sworn in for his second two-year term, but already he’d distinguished himself enough among his 220 Democratic peers that he was enlisted to be part of the small team tasked with arguing against the objections Republicans were expected to raise to Joe Biden’s certification as president-elect that day, January 6th, 2021. Neguse, father of a two-year-old baby girl, had spent the past several weeks on the phone and on Zoom, working through the holidays with his more senior colleagues — Reps. Jamie Raskin, Adam Schiff, Zoe Lofgren — as he polished his arguments. That morning, he’d come to the House chamber prepared for debate to stretch late into the night, through multiple rounds of objections and defenses. In that moment, Neguse says, “I was very … [Read more...] about How the Breakout Star of the Impeachment Hearings Managed to Keep His Faith in Democracy
Exclusive: After 2020 Gains, Kevin McCarthy Eyes House GOP Majority, Speaker’s Gavel in Midterms
House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy has a fresh spring in his step after the Republicans defied the odds and professional political prognosticators by picking up 15 seats in the 2020 congressional elections. McCarthy, who has his eyes on the majority in November 2022, approached the 2020 congressional elections differently than Republicans in recent history have traditionally targeted congressional electoral efforts, and his moves paid off—and not only infuriated but befuddled the beltway pundit class. For the first time since 1994, in 2020 no GOP incumbent running for reelection lost. Meanwhile, McCarthy blew away fundraising records previously set by former House Speaker Paul Ryan—astonishing since he did it from the minority. Usually, House political leaders do better raising money from the majority. That’s not to mention the most significant development which is a freshman class entering Congress in 2021 that represents perhaps the most diverse in party history with the most … [Read more...] about Exclusive: After 2020 Gains, Kevin McCarthy Eyes House GOP Majority, Speaker’s Gavel in Midterms
