KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian police said on Thursday (Feb 18) they had questioned the founder of a dating application being probed for suspected exploitation for prostitution, after complaints over its claim that thousands of university students had signed up as "sugarbabies". US, rights groups criticise Malaysia for deportations to Myanmar
WASHINGTON: The United States on Wednesday (Feb 24) led criticism of Malaysia for deporting more than 1,000 Myanmar nationals back to their military-ruled nation in defiance of a court order. The migrants, who activists say include vulnerable asylum seekers, departed Tuesday on Myanmar navy ships from a Malaysian military base just weeks after a coup. Rights groups had fiercely criticised the plan, and hours before the deportation the Kuala Lumpur High Court ordered it be temporarily halted to allow a legal challenge from activists. The United States, which under President Joe Biden has ramped back up refugee admissions and sought to rally pressure to reverse Myanmar's coup, said it was "concerned" by the move by Malaysia, with which Washington has enjoyed largely friendly relations in recent years. "House visits are not allowed, as are cross-district and interstate activities to celebrate the Chinese New Year," he added. Mr Ismail Sabri, who is also defence minister, said the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the festival were drawn up after reviewing various aspects and the advice of the health ministry. All states in Malaysia except Sarawak are currently placed under the movement control order (MCO) until Feb 18 to rein in the spread of COVID-19, as total cases surpassed 230,000. The minister added that cultural activities and performances such as lion and dragon dances, lantern and chingay parades as well as Chinese opera … [Read more...] about No visiting during Chinese New Year, reunion dinner among those in same household only: Putrajaya
