60% of large electrical appliances must be collected for e-waste recycling

SINGAPORE: Manufacturers of large household appliances must collect for recycling 60 per cent in weight of the appliances they supply to the market each year, the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (MEWR) announced on Thursday (Mar 7). These large appliances include refrigerators, air-conditioners, washing machines, dryers and televisions. The National Environment Agency (NEA) will also include electric mobility devices like power assisted bicycles and electric scooters in its targets for Singapore’s electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) management system. This is in anticipation of a need to dispose them and treat their batteries properly. The collection target for these devices is 20 per cent. Couple double the value of their house with stunning renovation and it’s now worth £2million

A SAVVY couple managed to double the value of their house with a smart renovation - and it’s now worth £2 million. Mum Tracey Gill and her husband bought the house in a small village near East Sussex in 2016, and have been transforming it ever since. Tracey says her husband gave her a fairly wide brief when house-hunting, explaining he said: “Find a house ripe for transformation in the prettiest location. Describing the state they bought it in, the mum-of-two said: “It was covered in cream pebble dash with concrete roof tiles, a north facing conservatory on the front of the house, modern leaded light windows, low ceilings, dark rooms, artexed walls, cheap fittings, decades old carpets, pink shag pile in the bathroom and an unimaginative … [Read more...] about Couple double the value of their house with stunning renovation and it’s now worth £2million

Biden leads memorial for 400,000 US COVID-19 victims on eve of inauguration

WASHINGTON: President-elect Joe Biden on Tuesday (Jan 19) led a national memorial observance on the eve of his inauguration to honour the 400,000 Americans who have died from COVID-19 during the 11 months since the novel coronavirus claimed its first US victim. The sundown commemoration came just hours before President Donald Trump was due to leave the White House and hand over a country in crisis. The ceremony, spearheaded by Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris from the base of the Lincoln Memorial, marked the federal government's first official nod to the staggering death toll from the pandemic. "We must remember. It's hard sometimes to remember, but that's how we heal. It's important to do that as a nation," Biden said in brief remarks to kick off a tribute that was to include observances in cities across the country. As darkness fell over the nation's capital, 400 electric lamps lining the sides of the Reflecting Pool were illuminated to honour the 400,000 lives … [Read more...] about Biden leads memorial for 400,000 US COVID-19 victims on eve of inauguration
