It is the most commercially successful Afrofuturistic US work to date: the Marvel blockbuster Black Panther was nominated for an Oscar in seven categories in 2019, ultimately winning three of the awards including for best picture and best costume design. The Oscar-winning designer of the film's groundbreaking costumes was Ruth E. Carter. Carter, who was born on April 10, 1960 in Springfield, Massachusetts, had originally planned to pursue a completely different career path: She wanted to become an actress. But it was when she started helping out in the costume department of her student theater group at Hampton University that she found a new calling. So after graduating from university, she trained as a costume designer at the Santa Fe Opera in New Mexico, subsequently moving to Los Angeles. For more than 40 years now, Ruth E. Carter has been designing costumes for independent films and Hollywood blockbusters alike, working with Stephen Spielberg, Denzel Washington and … [Read more...] about Afrofuturism in Hollywood: Ruth E. Germany: CDU’s Armin Laschet reportedly has majority support for chancellor candidacy
The state parties of Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) stood behind their party's national leader, Armin Laschet , to stand as candidate for chancellor in national elections set for September, it emerged on Monday following a meeting in Berlin. Hesse state premier Volker Bouffier, who attended the meeting of major CDU figures, told Germany's dpa news agency that Laschet has the support of majority of leading CDU figures. The news gives Laschet an important boost, but the final decision on the candidacy has not yet been made, as Laschet's rival, Markus Söder, Bavarian state premier and leader of the CDU's sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), on Sunday declared his interest in the candidacy. That set the scene for a week of uncertainty for the CDU/CSU alliance since Söder currently enjoys more popularity than Laschet among the German population at large — and among CDU voters. On Monday afternoon, Laschet told reporters that he would speak to Söder during … [Read more...] about Germany: CDU’s Armin Laschet reportedly has majority support for chancellor candidacy
3 don’t-miss deals from Amazon’s Certified Refurbished Sale
People sometimes ask me, "Rick, do you like refurbished electronics?" My response: "No. I love refurbished electronics!" This probably explains why I get invited to few parties. I really do love refurbished gear, though, especially when it's good as new but for a much lower price. Case in point: Amazon's Certified Refurbished sale has a handful of extra-good deals, three of which I've highlighted below. Here's where the love comes in: Each product here is inspected and tested to look and work like new. And each product is backed by a full one-year warranty, same as a new one. The only real difference is the packaging: refurbs typically come in non-descript brown boxes, not fancy, colorful retail ones. To my thinking that matters only if you're shopping for a gift for someone -- and even then it's not really a huge deal. (It's what's inside that counts, right?) Here are three don't-miss deals from today's sale. Certified Refurbished Echo Show 8 $70 (save $60) … [Read more...] about 3 don’t-miss deals from Amazon’s Certified Refurbished Sale
Why Some People Refuse to Practice Social Distancing
In the past month, a bit of invasive viral RNA has crafted the entire world’s behavior and kept us tethered to our houses. A global call for inaction for the greater good is unprecedented in our lifetimes. The instructions are simple: There is a pandemic. Stay home. But staying at home turns out to be an impressive act of collective compassion and collective strength. This is a stretch for many. For some, the enemy is still invisible, as not all areas have been affected by COVID-19 yet. It is a tsunami reported many miles away. For others, the effects of social distancing feel like a tidal wave within a family, even in the absence of personal sickness. Staying 6 feet apart is inconvenient, but adherence, or lack thereof, to social distancing guidelines is making partners fight and splitting houses. The people who refuse to fully socially distance are not heartless people—in fact, they are often the doers among us, the people who normally rush in to help and now feel … [Read more...] about Why Some People Refuse to Practice Social Distancing
