Australia’s news media bargaining code is a form of ransomware, and someone paid up

We need to do something. This is something. Therefore we need to do it. This is the logic that led to Australia's wondrously strange news media bargaining code . Let's take a step back. There was indeed a problem, a problem that goes back more than a quarter of a century. It's that the internet changed everything. But it was only ever really a problem for news business that failed to adapt. News is expensive to make. That's why for most of the 20th century, commercial news operations bundled it with advertising, which was the main income stream, and cheap filler content. The audience got the whole bundle in one lump, whether it be on dead trees whose slaughter and distribution they paid for, or via radio or TV. But then the internet unbundled everything. People who wanted the advertising went straight to sites that were nothing but ads for real estate or used cars or second-hand furniture or people who wanted a date. Advertising also moved to places like Facebook, which … [Read more...] about Australia’s news media bargaining code is a form of ransomware, and someone paid up

Funeral director worries for bereaved

Of all the restrictions placed on Manitobans during the pandemic, those that restrict funerals and those grieving the loss of a loved one may be the most damaging of them all. “The health of people is my concern, the wellness of people, their mental wellness, which plays out physically, emotionally, spiritually. Those restrictions that are in place right now, I’m finding are detrimental to people’s mental health,” said David Klassen, a funeral director with Braendle-Bruce Funeral Service in Russell. Klassen noted an Alberta funeral that took place last year, where many people contracted COVID-19. But, he said, the funeral was not governed by a funeral director. “The families did it on their own. There are some, there are very few, but there are some communities where funeral directors aren’t actually present at the ceremony and the burial,” he said. “Kevin (Sweryd) from MFSA (Manitoba Funeral Service Association) will quickly tell you that best practices as far as funeral … [Read more...] about Funeral director worries for bereaved

LeBron James going to All-Star with elections on his mind

LeBron James is going to Georgia this weekend for more than the NBA All-Star Game. He’s thinking about upcoming elections as well. The Los Angeles Lakers’ star, one of the organizers of the More Than A Vote organization that aims to stop Black voter suppression and which played a major role in the outcome of the 2020 elections by encouraging voter turnout, will narrate an ad that will be aired for the first time during Sunday’s All-Star Game in Atlanta — in which he vows that the efforts will continue. “Look what we made happen, what our voices made possible,” James says in the 51-second spot. “And now, look what they’re trying to do to silence us, using every trick in the book and attacking democracy itself. Because they saw what we’re capable of, and they fear it.” With the All-Star Game being relocated to Atlanta because of the pandemic — the original plan was for it to be played in Indianapolis last month — it provided James and the More Than A Vote group the perfect … [Read more...] about LeBron James going to All-Star with elections on his mind

UK government opens investigation into Apple’s ‘anti-competitive behaviour’

The UK government has announced that the Competition and Markets Authority will respond to complaints that the App Store (which controls what apps can be downloaded on Apple devices and takes a 30% cut of all payments) may break competition law by launching an investigation into "anti-competitive behaviour." This is perhaps most notable in the larger context of various European Commission probes into the company, and the larger campaign against the App Store by Fortnite maker Epic Games. "The CMA’s investigation will consider whether Apple has a dominant position in connection with the distribution of apps on Apple devices in the UK—and, if so, whether Apple imposes unfair or anti-competitive terms on developers using the App Store, ultimately resulting in users having less choice or paying higher prices for apps and add-ons." The investigation will look at Apple as a corporate group in its entirety as it relates to the UK: so Apple UK Limited, Apple Europe Limited, and … [Read more...] about UK government opens investigation into Apple’s ‘anti-competitive behaviour’
