LAHAD DATU (Bernama): The General Operations Force (GOF) here arrested a man and seized duty-unpaid cigarettes of various brands worth RM4.11mil, hidden in four lorries in Jalan Segama here, on Wednesday (Feb 10). Sabah GOF commander Senior Asst Comm Mohd Abduh Ismail said that the team, acting on information received about the location of the smuggling of contraband cigarettes, raided the area at 1.30pm after an hour of surveillance. "During the raid, a 33-year-old man who claimed to be a store employee was arrested, while three other suspects managed to flee through the backyard, ” he said in a statement on Friday (Feb 12). He said the team inspected the four lorries parked in the backyard and found 29,337 cartons of contraband cigarettes of various brands in the cargo compartments. FDA investigating e-cigarette maker selling fruit-flavor vaporizers despite ban
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating Puff Bar, an e-cigarette seller, after it began selling fruit-flavor disposable vaporizers on its website despite an FDA ban. The agency put a ban on fruity e-cigarettes due to the high popularity of the addictive substance among teenagers. Puff Bar changed their e-cigarettes by using tobacco-free nicotine to get around the ban, the Wall Street Journal reported . The FDA told The Hill that it is investigating the new move by Puff Bar and did not say if the tobacco-free nicotine was enough to get around the FDA’s ban. Cigarette manufacturers planning to set up shop in the country’s special economic zones (SEZs) will soon need to register with the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) before they can be allowed to operate, according to the Department of Finance (DoF). In a statement on Tuesday, the DoF quoted Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez 3rd as informing Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez that the BIR is now drafting the revised rules covering the operations of cigarette makers inside SEZs. “Meanwhile, the interagency meeting resolved to require secondary licenses, i.e., BIR registration to manufacture cigarettes secured from the Excise Tax Division, prior to issuance of the locator’s certificate of registration by the PEZA,” he told Lopez in a letter. Lopez, as Trade Secretary, supervises over the Department of Trade and Industry-attached Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA). HAVERHILL (CBS) — A cigarette tossed out a window is being cited as the cause of a fire that destroyed a multi-family home in Haverhill on Monday afternoon while an 11-year-old boy was inside the building doing school work. Investigators said they believe a smoker tossed cigarettes out of a third-floor window, setting the roof that extended out below the third floor or debris in the gutter on fire.
