COVID-19 pandemic a long way from over: WHO chief

Even though more than 780 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have now been administered globally, the pandemic is "a long way from over" but it can be brought under control in months with proven public health measures, World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said. The coronavirus, which emerged first in central China's Wuhan city in December 2019, has infected more than 136,500,400 people and killed over 2,944,500 people across the world. “In January and February, the world saw six consecutive weeks of declining cases. We have now seen seven consecutive weeks of increasing cases, and four weeks of increasing deaths. Last week was the fourth-highest number of cases in a single week so far. Several countries in Asia and the Middle East have seen large increases in cases,” WHO Director-General Ghebreyesus said. Speaking to reporters in Geneva, he said while more than 780 million doses of vaccine have now been administered globally, vaccines are a … [Read more...] about COVID-19 pandemic a long way from over: WHO chief

Israel Okays Jordan’s Water Request After Weeks-Long Delay Amid Diplomatic Spat, Reports Suggest

The request was submitted several weeks ago through the joint Israeli-Jordanian water committee, as Jordan faces a deficit of water resources, according to The Times of Israel. Under the peace agreement concluded in 1994, the two Middle Eastern nations have agreed on allocations of water from the Jordan and Yarmouk rivers, as well as on the mutual assistance to help cope with the water shortages by developing existing and new water resources. © Photo : Yuri Raysper Israel Using Red Sea-Dead Sea Water Project With Jordan to Keep Daesh, Iran Out of Region - Journo Earlier in April, the Israeli Haaretz newspaper reported that Netanyahu had delayed the response in light of recent diplomatic tensions between the countries, particularly connected to the cancellation of his visit to the UAE as Jordan withheld permission for the prime minister's flight over its territory back in mid-March. The move appears to be in retaliation for delay in approving the Jordanian crown … [Read more...] about Israel Okays Jordan’s Water Request After Weeks-Long Delay Amid Diplomatic Spat, Reports Suggest

Israel pledges to work with U.S. on Iran

JERUSALEM (Reuters) -Israel's defence minister pledged on Sunday to cooperate with the United States on Iran, voicing hope that Israeli security would be safeguarded under any renewed Iranian nuclear deal that Washington reaches. "Israel views the United States as a full partner across all operational theatres, not the least Iran," Benny Gantz said after hosting visiting U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. "And we will work closely with our American allies to ensure that any new agreement with Iran will secure the vital interests of the world and the United States, prevent a dangerous arms race in our region and protect the State of Israel." Austin, making the first visit to Israel by a senior Biden administration official, told his counterpart that Washington views the alliance with Israel as central to regional security. Austin's visit includes talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is worried about the Democratic administration's desire for a U.S. return to the … [Read more...] about Israel pledges to work with U.S. on Iran

100,000-year-old Neanderthal footprints show children playing in the sand

Some 100,000 years ago, an extended family of 36 Neanderthals walked along a beach, with the kids jumping and frolicking in the sand, scientists report after analyzing the beachgoers' fossilized footprints in what is now southern Spain. "We have found some areas where several small footprints appeared grouped in a chaotic arrangement," said Eduardo Mayoral, a paleontologist at the University of Huelva and lead author of the study, which was published online March 11 in the journal Scientific Reports . The footprints "could indicate an area of passage of very young individuals, as if they were playing or loitering on the shore of the nearby waterlogged area," Mayoral told Live Science in an email.
