Police break up cross-border infant trafficking ring

The police searched houses on February 25 to investigate traders hired to take care of the newborn babies before selling them on to China. Four mothers were arrested on suspicion of getting involved in the trafficking ring, while four babies were also rescued. During the operation, the police also discovered an eight-month pregnant woman who had intended to sell her child once the baby is born, along with two other pregnant mothers who had been brought to China. The police said the large-scale nature of the newborn trafficking ring involves the participation of both domestic and foreign suspects. At present, the four babies are now being taken care of by a social welfare centre operated by the Vietnam Women's Union. The police are expanding the scope of investigation. … [Read more...] about Police break up cross-border infant trafficking ring

Commentary: Let Singapore’s green spaces grow wild

SINGAPORE: One of the unexpected delights of the circuit breaker from Apr 7 to Jun 1 was the visible flourishing of natural life across Singapore, as grass-cutting and weeding activities ground to a halt. In once closely mown grass patches, tropical wildflowers, forest shrub seedlings and native tree saplings sprang up. More butterflies, bees and birds were seen flitting about residential estates, roadsides and park connectors. And people were enjoying the revitalised spaces too, judging from positive reactions on social media. Many netizens expressed appreciation for their beauty and diversity of plant and animal life. Some reminisced how these lush landscapes reminded them of Singapore in the 1960s and 70s. READ: Commentary: The wonder of clear skies and returning wildlife is our new climate problem On a practical level, some suggested that less manicured green spaces would reduce the air and noise pollution produced by gasoline-powered leaf blowers and mowers. During a … [Read more...] about Commentary: Let Singapore’s green spaces grow wild

First successful birth of critically endangered Malayan tiger cubs at Wildlife Reserves Singapore in 23 years

SINGAPORE: The Night Safari has welcomed a pair of Malayan tiger cubs, the first successful birth of the critically endangered species at Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) since 1998. The Malayan tiger faces extinction along with five other remaining sub-species of tigers around the world, WRS said in a press release on Thursday (Feb 25). Deputy CEO and Chief Life Sciences Officer for WRS, Dr Cheng Wen-Haur said the twin births are a significant addition to the population of this subspecies, given that there are only an estimated 150 Malayan tigers left in the wild. READ: Lion cub born at Singapore Zoo, first in the country conceived through assisted reproduction The yet-to-be-named feline siblings are currently cared for by their mother Intan, in an off-exhibit area. WRS said the animal care team closely monitors their progress via closed circuit cameras and that Intan is proving to be “a great mum” and is often observed grooming and playing with her cubs. … [Read more...] about First successful birth of critically endangered Malayan tiger cubs at Wildlife Reserves Singapore in 23 years

Oil retreats on rising US dollar, though Texas supply choked

MELBOURNE: Oil prices fell in early trade on Wednesday as the U.S. dollar climbed, retreating after a two-day rally that was driven by an Arctic blast curbing output from oil and gas fields in Texas, the country's biggest oil-producing state. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures gave up 33 cents, or 0.6per cent to US$59.72 a barrel at 0140 GMT, retreating from a 13-month high of AUS$60.95 hit on Tuesday. Brent crude futures dropped 40 cents, or 0.6per cent, to US$62.95 a barrel, coming off three days of gains. "Oil is trading lower via a stronger U.S. dollar which is gaining a head of steam with U.S. (treasury) yields ripping higher," Axi chief market strategist Stephen Innes said in a note. A stronger U.S. dollar makes U.S.-dollar priced crude more costly for buyers holding other currencies. Brent also dropped after Norway, western Europe's largest oil and gas producer, averted a strike and shutdowns of major offshore fields, as oil workers reached a wage … [Read more...] about Oil retreats on rising US dollar, though Texas supply choked
