SINGAPORE: A family with roots in both Singapore and Malaysia found itself at a loss, after an adopted grandaunt died alone in her Johor Bahru home over the weekend. The family shares homes across the border, but was in Singapore when Malaysia imposed its Movement Control Order (MCO) on Mar 18, closing schools and non-essential businesses. People were also urged to stay at home. Madam Chu Ngan was found dead, crouched over a chair in her Taman Tasek home on Sunday (Apr 12) by a family friend delivering food to her. She was a few days shy of her 90th birthday, her relative who wanted to be known only as Mrs Cheong told CNA. Mrs Cheong, a 67-year-old Malaysian and Singapore permanent resident, lives mostly in Singapore with her husband and two sons, all Singaporeans. She would go to Malaysia to stay with Mdm Chu on weekends, and on weekdays, for a day or so. A part-time maid would visit Mdm Chu, who was adopted by Mrs Cheong's grandmother years ago, daily to buy food for her … [Read more...] about Elderly woman dies alone in Malaysia, family in Singapore struggles with funeral arrangements amid COVID-19 restrictions

Protesters to return to US streets following Floyd’s funeral
HOUSTON: Protesters will take to the streets across the United States again on Wednesday (Jun 10) one day after the funeral of George Floyd, whose death in police custody has ignited the biggest surge of anti-racism activism since the civil rights era of the 1960s. Hundreds of protesters in the west coast city of Seattle filled City Hall into early Wednesday calling for the mayor to resign and for police reforms. More protests were expected from Atlanta to New York City and Los Angeles in what will be the 16th straight day of demonstrations. In Washington, one of Floyd's brothers was due to speak to a Democratic-led congressional panel on Wednesday as lawmakers take on the twin issues of police violence and racial injustice. Captain Tom Moore honoured with WWII plane fly-past honours at funeral
Church bells rang out and a World War II-era plane flew over the funeral service of Captain Tom Moore to honour of the veteran who single-handedly raised millions of pounds for Britain's health workers by walking laps in his backyard. Soldiers performed ceremonial duties at the private service for Moore, who died February 2 at age 100 after testing positive for Covid-19 . Captain Tom, as he became known, inspired the UK during the first months of the coronavirus pandemic with his humble endeavour that raised almost £33 million (NZ$63.5 million) for Britain's National Health Service last year. The private service was small, attended by just eight members of the veteran's immediate family. But soldiers carried his coffin, draped in the Union flag, from the hearse to a crematorium and formed a ceremonial guard. Others performed a gun salute before a C-47 Dakota military transport plane flew past. Funeral and more protests follow deadly shootings in Myanmar
Crowds in Myanmar’s capital attended a funeral Sunday (local time) for the young woman who was the first person confirmed to have been killed in protests against the military’s takeover , just one day after security forces shot dead two more demonstrators. Mya Thwet Thwet Khine was shot in the head by police on February 9, two days before her 20th birthday, at a protest in the capital, Naypyitaw, and died Friday. Mourners lined the entrance to a cemetery in the city as the hearse carrying her body arrived and was taken to a crematorium where more people had gathered. They silently raised their hands in three-fingered salutes – a sign of defiance and resistance adopted from neighbouring Thailand – as the black and gold vehicle rolled slowly past. Inside the crematorium hall, the lid on Mya Thwet Thwet Khine’s coffin was partially removed to allow a last glimpse of her head resting on a bed of red and white roses before she was cremated. Members of the crowd outside chanted “Our … [Read more...] about Funeral and more protests follow deadly shootings in Myanmar
5,400 home renovation projects get approval to resume work after circuit breaker
SINGAPORE: More than 5,400 home renovation projects have received approval to resume work, as Singapore moves into its first phase of reopening after the "circuit breaker" period. New applications to resume suspended renovation works will be approved within two days "if the submission is in order", the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) said on Wednesday (Jun 3). Approved contractors can immediately resume work with construction workers who are staying in private residential and HDB premises, as those workers have completed a 28-day stay-home notice and do not need to undergo a COVID-19 swab test before starting work. Workers staying in dormitories cleared by the inter-agency task force can also resume work, BCA said. All construction workers will be periodically tested for COVID-19 after they start work. Any worker who tests positive will have to stop work immediately, and their close contacts will be quarantined.
