The Magic’s rebuilding effort has been ongoing since they traded Dwight Howard to the Lakers in August of 2012. It’s still very much a work in progress, but it looks like GM Rob Hennigan is going to be given the opportunity to finish what he started, according to a new report from the Orlando Sentinel ‘s Josh Robbins : The Orlando Magic soon will seek to extend general manager Rob Hennigan’s contract beyond the 2015-16 season, an industry source with knowledge of the team’s plans told the Orlando Sentinel. The DeVos family and CEO Alex Martins are pleased with the job Hennigan has done since Hennigan was hired in June 2012. Martins, who would not comment for this article, likes to maintain continuity in key leadership positions. Martins also believes it’s dangerous to have a key executive work in the final season of a contract because uncertainty about job status can prompt an executive to make risky decisions for short-term gains. It’s tough to evaluate the job Hennigan … [Read more...] about Report: Magic plan to give GM Rob Hennigan a contract extension

Report: People connected to Tom Thibodeau exploring options if Bulls let him go, including Magic
Tom Thibodeau and the Bulls’ front office clearly have issues with each other . The key question: How significant? Thibodeau is an excellent coach, in spite of his tendency to run his players into the ground. He’s also under contract for two seasons after this one. The Bulls could very well want him back next season – but that’s not a certainty. They’re reportedly even enamored with Fred Hoiberg as Thibodeau’s replacement . So, Thibodeau is seemingly doing the responsible thing and having his people explore his options. Ric Bucher of Bleacher Report : League sources say that third parties connected to Thibodeau have been exploring what his potential other options would be, including the Orlando Magic. The Magic, who fired Jacque Vaughn in February , will have an opening this offseason – and they should want Thibodeau. He’s better than the other coaches mentioned for the job: Brian Shaw , Scott Skiles and Billy Donovan . But would Thibodeau want the Magic? … [Read more...] about Report: People connected to Tom Thibodeau exploring options if Bulls let him go, including Magic
Nash pleased with Nets’ growth after eighth straight win
The Nets extended their winning streak to eight games with a 129-92 thrashing of the Orlando Magic in the NBA on Thursday (February 25). Nash said the Nets' growth was down to their improved defense and connectivity. "A big part of it is our group's bonding, they're growing together, they're starting to feel success and roles are shoring up and you can sense it out there," the Nets head coach told a news conference. "They're having more fun, they're connected offensively and defensively, they have a lot more poise together, that collective experience while we're still a new group is starting to come through. "That as much as the improvement defensively, understanding defensively and the fact that we realise defense is a weak spot for us, they're locked in, they're focused and for the most part they're working at their defense, so those two things for me are the most important." Report: Magic willing to offer Bulls compensation (likely second-rounder or two) for Tom Thibodeau
If the Magic are delaying their coach search to make a play for Tom Thibodeau , they’ve heard mostly good news (from their perspective) about Thibodeau’s relationship with the Bulls . But that’s not all it will take to lure Thibodeau to Orlando, even if he’s interested . Apparently, the Magic are willing to do the rest. Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders : Sources close to the situation say not only would the Magic give the Bulls compensation (likely a second-round pick or two) for the chance to get at Thibodeau, sources also said the Magic would meet the expected $7-8 million per year coaching salary Thibodeau likely commands in his next deal. The Nets got two second-rounders from the Bucks for Jason Kidd . The Celtics got a first-rounder from the Clippers for Doc Rivers . The Heat got a second rounder and the right to swap lottery-protected first-rounders (or another second rounder/other compensation) from the Magic for Stan Van Gundy . Obviously, each … [Read more...] about Report: Magic willing to offer Bulls compensation (likely second-rounder or two) for Tom Thibodeau
