Hang Seng Indexes shakes up Hong Kong benchmark, aims to include 100 companies
HONG KONG: Hang Seng Indexes said on Monday (Mar 1) it would shake up the main Hong Kong stock benchmark with the goal of including 100 companies, part of an effort to ensure the index better reflects the range of firms listed in Hong Kong. The Hang Seng Index has historically been dominated by financial services institutions, and even after recent tweaks and additions, these currently account for 40 per cent of the benchmark. Tech giant Tencent, insurer AIA, and HSBC combined currently make up just shy of 30 per cent of the index. The changes included increasing the number of constituents of the Hang Seng Index to as many as 80 by mid-2022 from the 52 now, with an eventual goal of reaching 100, the provider said. It would also shrink the weighting cap on individual constituents to 8 per cent from 10 per cent now, and remove a lower weighting cap of 5 per cent for companies whose shares come with different classes of voting rights, Hang Seng Indexes said. “The new … [Read more...] about Hang Seng Indexes shakes up Hong Kong benchmark, aims to include 100 companies
Further rise in bond yields seen; oil likely at $100/barrel
The 10-year and 30-year US Treasury finished at 1.34 per cent and 2.13 per cent, respectively, last week. The rise in US bond yields spooked investors last week and there could a further increase given the inflation dynamics, according to Christopher Wood, global head of equity strategy at Jefferies. “The US bond market sell-off has continued over the past week, and with it the increased potential for an inflation scare. Netflix to spend about US$100 million to support African-American communities
LOS GATOS, California: Netflix will allocate 2 per cent, or about US$100 million, of its cash holdings to financial institutions and organizations that directly support African American communities in the United States, the streaming giant said on Tuesday. The company said in a blog post it will start with US$35 million, of which US$25 million will be moved to a new fund, Black Economic Development Initiative, and US$10 million will go to Hope Credit Union for creating opportunity in underserved communities. The move comes as US companies face increasing pressure from investors, consumers and workers to take action against widespread racial inequality after the death of African American George Floyd in police custody. "This capital will fuel social mobility and prosperity in the low- and moderate-income communities these groups serve," Netflix said on Tuesday. Earlier this month, Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings donated US$1 million to think tank The Center for Policing … [Read more...] about Netflix to spend about US$100 million to support African-American communities
Economic development the main focus in first 100 days of Jokowi’s final term in office: Analysts
JAKARTA: Indonesian President Joko Widodo has prioritised economic development during the first 100 days of his last term in office, say analysts interviewed by CNA, adding that other matters like the environment and legal reforms may have taken a backseat. This approach is in stark contrast with Mr Widodo's first term in office, where he quickly tackled an array of issues like the law, security and economy. In every public occasion during the last few months, the Indonesian leader, popularly known as Jokowi, has spoken about global economic challenges and investment, noted political analyst Yunarto Wijaya from think-tank Charta Politika. “This has its consequences and risks. Other sectors are being less prioritised,” Mr Wijaya said. "This is a good sign for investors and economists, but on the other hand, it creates a big risk for those not in that sector such as law enforcers, corruption eradicators, environmentalists, and human rights defenders."
