SAN RAMON, California: Business software pioneer Salesforce.com is buying work-chatting service Slack for US$27.7 billion in a deal aimed at giving the two companies a better shot at competing against longtime industry powerhouse Microsoft. The acquisition announced on Tuesday (Dec 1) is by far the largest in the 21-year history of Salesforce. The San Francisco company was one of the first to begin selling software as a subscription service that could be used on any Internet-connected device instead of the more cumbersome process of installing the programs on individual computers. Salesforce's flamboyant founder and CEO Marc Benioff hailed the "cloud computing" concept as the wave of the future to much derision initially. But software as a service has become an industry standard that has turned into a gold mine for longtime software makers. Microsoft for one has developed its own thriving online suite of services, known as Office 365, which includes a Teams chatting service … [Read more...] about Salesforce to buy work chat service Slack for US$27.7 billion
LONDON: George Russell has dampened speculation of an early move to Mercedes after his impressive performance as stand-in for seven times world champion Lewis Hamilton. The 22-year-old Briton fuelled some chatter when he said in Bahrain last Sunday (Dec 10) that he hoped he had given Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff a selection headache "not just for 2022, maybe sooner". "That was just a throwaway remark in the heat of the moment," Russell told reporters at Formula One's season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Thursday. "Obviously emotions were high and what have you. I have a contract and am a Williams driver for 2021." Valtteri Bottas is out of contract at the end of next season, when Mercedes-managed Russell will be firmly in the frame for a move. The youngster is still waiting to hear whether Hamilton, still isolating in Bahrain, can race at Yas Marina after testing positive for COVID-19. "We’re still waiting to get Lewis’s results back. For now we are going ahead as … [Read more...] about Formula 1: Russell plays down ‘throwaway remark’ on Mercedes move

REUTERS: The S&P 500 inched up to a record high close on Wednesday and the Nasdaq Composite Index dipped as investors weighed upbeat vaccine developments and a potential coronavirus fiscal package against a bleak private jobs report. Republicans and Democrats in Congress remained unable to reach agreement on fresh relief for a pandemic-hit U.S. economy, although some investors said bad economic news could spur policy makers to push harder for a deal. U.S. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer also expressed hope that a deal could be reached "in the next few days." Signs of progress in the race to distribute a vaccine have driven U.S. stocks higher in recent days. In the latest upbeat development, Pfizer Inc and BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine got the green light for use in Britain, the first Western country to approve a shot for COVID-19. Pfizer and BioNTech both surged. Underscoring the argument for fiscal stimulus, data showed private payrolls increased less than expected … [Read more...] about S&P 500 hits record as investors await fiscal deal
NEW YORK: In the land of lexicography, out of the whole of the English language, 2020's word of the year is a vocabulary of one. For the first time, two dictionary companies on Monday (Nov 30) — Merriam-Webster and Dictionary.com — declared the same word as their tops: pandemic. A third couldn't settle on just one so issued a 16-page report instead along the same lines, noting that a world of once-specialised terms entered the mainstream during the COVID-19 crisis. The year, Oxford Languages said in the report last week, “brought a new immediacy and urgency to the role of the lexicographer. In almost real-time, lexicographers were able to monitor and analyse seismic shifts in language data and precipitous frequency rises in new coinages." Its Oxford English Dictionary and others found themselves madly updating well beyond routine schedules to keep up. Such publication updates are usually planned far in advance. Because the coronavirus pandemic brought on gargantuan language … [Read more...] about Dictionary companies choose same word of the year: Pandemic
