China delays renewing credentials for journalists at US outlets

BEIJING: Beijing has held off renewing the expiring press credentials of journalists at US media outlets including Bloomberg, CNN and the Wall Street Journal, the news organisations reported, amid a tussle with Washington over journalist visas. The move comes as Chinese journalists in the United States wait for their lapsed work visas to be renewed. The Chinese journalists have been allowed to stay in the United States during a 90-day grace period that expires in early November, according to people familiar with the matter. No bribes or cities named “Amazon”: Colorado’s pitch to get the next headquarters touts incentives that could exceed $100M

There were no promises to create a Colorado city called Amazon. There were no bribes from the state like the 21-foot cactus an Arizona city sent to get the massive retailer to build a second headquarters there. And there was no way Colorado was going to touch one state’s lavish offer of $7 billion in public incentives. Colorado, which doesn’t plan to ask taxpayers for more funding to lure Amazon, on Wednesday submitted a more subdued proposal that state officials hope will attract a new employer and bring up to 50,000 jobs to the Denver region. The state emailed the official bid a day before Amazon’s deadline, as well as mailed five paper copies overnight to the Seattle retailer’s headquarters. “Colorado’s proposal does not lead with incentives. It leads with talent,” said Sam Bailey, who led the Metro Denver Economic Development Corp. in working with the state to submit the official bid. “Ultimately, 50,000 jobs shouldn’t be led with incentives but a community that has the … [Read more...] about No bribes or cities named “Amazon”: Colorado’s pitch to get the next headquarters touts incentives that could exceed $100M

Alex Berenson: Cancel culture beyond Orwellian — this is why I won’t give in to it

close Video Concha: The New York Times is 'lionizing cancel culture' Fox News contributor Joe Concha reacts to The New York Times being accused of celebrating cancel culture for spotlighting a video of a teenaged girl using a racial slur, in which, led to her being forced to withdraw from college. Even George Orwell couldn’t have imagined it: in the country where free speech first became a constitutional right, left-wing journalists and frightened media companies are desperately censoring people with views they consider unpleasant. So far this month, New York Times columnists have called for a federal "reality czar" and asked cable companies to keep viewers from seeing Fox News as easily as CNN or MSNBC. A Times reporter was forced to resign for using a racial slur – though both he and the paper’s top editor, who is African American, said he had used it without malign intent. Video The Times then refused to run a column about the … [Read more...] about Alex Berenson: Cancel culture beyond Orwellian — this is why I won’t give in to it

Turkish government accused of hiding true extent of COVID-19 outbreak

ANKARA: Turkey’s government is being accused of hiding the true extent of the country's coronavirus outbreak after the health minister revealed that the daily COVID-19 figures published by his ministry reflect only patients with symptoms and not all positive cases. Health Minister Fahrettin Koca acknowledged during a news conference late on Wednesday (Sep 30) that since Jul 29, Turkey has been reporting the number of patients being cared for in hospitals or at their homes. The count did not include asymptomatic positive cases, he said, ignoring a question about the number of new positive coronavirus cases per day, a key indicator of where the outbreak is headed in any country. “We are talking about people with symptoms. We are giving this as the daily number of patients,” he told reporters. The revelation led to an outcry on social media, with people calling on the government to reveal the true spread of the coronavirus among the population of 83 million. The hashtag asking … [Read more...] about Turkish government accused of hiding true extent of COVID-19 outbreak

Biden picks Xavier Becerra for health secretary, key role in battling pandemic

WASHINGTON: President-elect Joe Biden has picked California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to be his health secretary, putting a defender of the Affordable Care Act in a leading role to oversee his administration's coronavirus response. If confirmed by the Senate, Becerra, 62, will be the first Latino to head the Department of Health and Human Services, a US$1-trillion-plus agency with 80,000 employees and a portfolio that includes drugs and vaccines, leading-edge medical research and health insurance programs covering more than 130 million Americans. As California's attorney general, Becerra has led the coalition of Democratic states defending “Obamacare” from the Trump administration's latest effort to overturn it, a legal case awaiting a Supreme Court decision next year. A former senior House Democrat, Becerra played a role in steering the Obama health law through Congress in 2009 and 2010. At the time he would tell reporters that one of the primary motivations for him was … [Read more...] about Biden picks Xavier Becerra for health secretary, key role in battling pandemic
