Outriders was supposed to be the first big, third-party video game of this new console generation. It was revealed back before players had a hint of what the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X would even look like, making it seem like a day-one launch was imminent. A few delays later and the sci-fi game was pushed out of 2020 entirely and into a new April 1 release date . With the release date finally looming, Square Enix dropped a demo for the third-person shooter, which gives players a taste of what’s to come. The three-hour gameplay snippet features a handful of missions, a brief introduction to the game’s war-torn world, and a whole lot of shooting. While Outriders offers up intrigue with its ability-based class system, playing it feels like entering a time machine. It’s a game design period piece that harkens back to the heyday of Xbox 360 shooters, for better or worse. Take cover It’s not hard to describe Outriders ; it’s a sci-fi third-person shooter with … [Read more...] about Outriders feels like a game design period piece for the Xbox 360 generation

Insiders say Google lacked the focus and discipline to run a successful game studio
In context: Part of what led to Stadia Games and Entertainment division's early demise is the underwhelming number of subscribers the platform managed to garner since November 2019. Although Google has not posted official numbers, Bloomberg quotes insiders stating Stadia missed controller sales and monthly active user count goals "by hundreds of thousands." The low adoption rates may be attributed to how the platform was marketed and released. This is arguably the biggest waste of money and resources in Google's history. Stadia broke from Google's typical "start small and build" philosophy of product development. Unlike other Google products with long beta cycles, like Gmail, it was marketed and hyped as a full service that was ready to kill off consoles. Stadia head Phil Harrison said it was "the future of gaming." Speaking with anonymous sources, including former employees of the now-defunct development house, Bloomberg and Wired uncovered some details surrounding what was … [Read more...] about Insiders say Google lacked the focus and discipline to run a successful game studio
Microsoft’s ‘cloud gaming’ service launches September 15th only on Android
In brief: Microsoft has finally set a launch date for xCloud, excuse me, its "cloud gaming" service. The free preview is getting cut off on September 11 with the paid program (bundled with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate) firing up on September 15 for $15 per month. Last month, Xbox head Phil Spencer announced that Project xCloud is launching sometime in September, although it won't be called that. It sounds like the company is just calling it "cloud gaming" for now, but for the sake of familiarity, I will continue to call it xCloud. While it remains ambivalent about the name, on Tuesday, Microsoft said the streaming service would officially launch on September 15. Unfortunately for some, xCloud is first coming exclusively to Andriod devices. Microsoft started the iOS preview in February, which is four months after it launched the Android beta. Additionally, Microsoft has been struggling with Apple's App Store restrictions, and the TestFlight group of 10,000 is much smaller than … [Read more...] about Microsoft’s ‘cloud gaming’ service launches September 15th only on Android
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Is Getting A Board Game
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has been ported to just about everything at this point, including Nintendo Switch and even Amazon Alexa. But Modiphius Entertainment sees one more platform it can be on: cardboard. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - The Board Game is in the works, and it appears the company will be seeking crowdfunding to make it possible. In a listing on the crowdfunding site Gamefound , Modiphius described The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - The Board Game as an "epic cooperative board game" that will be playable by one to four players. It's honestly baffling that it took this long for a Skyrim board game to be made at all. Naturally, it will take place on Skyrim itself, and it will be more of an adventure-style game than the miniatures-based The Elder Scrolls: Call To Arms game that Modiphius already announced. The company did hint, however, that you may be able to use your Call To Arms figures for this game in some fashion. Modiphius didn't share much else about the … [Read more...] about The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Is Getting A Board Game
Rising Games costs are a result of IOC’s reform delay – study
ATHENS: The Olympic Games' cost overruns in recent decades are a result of the International Olympic Committee's delay in undertaking deep reforms, and it is now paying the price, said the lead author of new Oxford University research. The study, "Regression to the Tail: Why the Olympics Blow Up," claimed all Olympics since 1960 had run over their budgets at an average of 172per cent. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics have also gone above the initial budget with almost US$13 billion already spent, according to organisers, before their costly delay by a year to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many cities in recent years have been scared off by the mounting price tag of hosting the Games, and the 2022 and 2026 winter Olympics were left with only two bidders each after several cities dropped out. The 2024 and 2028 summer Olympics were directly awarded to Paris and Los Angeles before a complete overhaul of the bidding process by the IOC. "Far more in terms of reform needs to be done," … [Read more...] about Rising Games costs are a result of IOC’s reform delay – study
