Alex Reid has revealed how an autism diagnosis in his 40s has made him rethink his whole life after years of relentless bullying. The former MMA fighter says he's always felt different - and has been treated badly because of it - his entire life. Now that he's been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome at the age of 45, he says things make a lot more sense to him. Alex, who is expecting a baby with his fiancée Nikki Manashe, opened up about his diagnosis in an exclusive chat with the Mirror. And he says that while he's always felt tough and able to deal with whatever has been thrown his way, inside him there's a little boy who's crying. "It's a relief in many ways but it's a bit unnerving because it's coming to terms with new things, but it also explains so much," he said. Alex discovered he had Asperger's by chance after an encounter with a family with an autistic child. He was walking through a park with Nikki one day when a young boy was running towards him and … [Read more...] about Alex Reid reveals autism diagnosis after lifetime of bullying for being ‘different’

COVID-19 threat could erode with time just as with H1N1, say experts
SINGAPORE: The outbreak of COVID-19 infections that started in Wuhan, China and has now spread to almost 30 other countries including Singapore could follow the same trajectory seen in the H1N1 influenza outbreak in Mexico just over a decade ago. It could fade into something less sinister later on, said infectious disease experts. In early March 2009, Mexico experienced outbreaks of respiratory illness and increased reports of patients with flu-like symptoms in several areas of the country. This new human H1N1 strain, which originated from swine flu in pigs, swept across the world and by the World Health Organization's (WHO) estimate, was responsible for more than 18,000 deaths globally in the 2009 pandemic. Zika virus is spreading ‘explosively’ and may be international health emergency, WHO warns
The World Health Organization (WHO) warned Thursday that the mosquito-borne Zika virus is spreading “explosively” throughout the Americas, and may consitute an international public health emergency. The agency is convening an emergency committee to determine by Feb. 1 whether Zika merits an emergency declaration, as the 2015 Ebola outbreak did. The Zika virus outbreak has been linked to a surge in the occurrence of a potentially fatal birth defect known as microcephaly, in which babies are born with unusually small heads and incomplete brain development. In addition, the virus has been linked to Guillain-Barre syndrome, which can cause paralysis in previously healthy adults. The outbreak constitutes a test of the reforms the WHO put in place in the wake of the Ebola outbreak. During that event, which only recently concluded, the cash-strapped international agency was accused of moving far too slowly in responding to urgent please from the ground in impoverished West African … [Read more...] about Zika virus is spreading ‘explosively’ and may be international health emergency, WHO warns
Commentary: South Korea has pulled off a stunning coronavirus turnaround
CANBERRA: Worldwide demand for South Korea’s “drive-thru” COVID-19 test kits and other precision contact tracing methods boosted the country’s image as a leading global health care and technology powerhouse. Early success in managing the pandemic also gave South Korean voters more confidence in President Moon Jae-in’s administration. On Apr 15, Moon’s public approval rating reached a 17-month high of 54.4 per cent and his Democratic Party won a landslide victory in the parliamentary elections. The election victory was partly a matter of luck. Moon’s leadership began to shine during the COVID-19 crisis, especially by swaying public opinion toward his administration’s all-out campaign for pandemic management. Until then, he had faced a lame-duck situation, with a record-low public approval rating of 39 per cent, partly due to the Cho Kuk scandal . He presided over South Korea’s slowest economic growth in decades and stalled nuclear talks with North Korea.
