REUTERS: IndyCar cancelled a doubleheader race weekend in Detroit due to the novel coronavirus outbreak on Monday but added three events to the schedule, including a third race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS). The tweaking of the calendar means IndyCar plans to run 15 races this season, which will now include double headers at Iowa Speedway and Laguna Seca. With Detroit developing into a coronavirus hot spot, the races set for May 30-31 in the Motor City became the latest sporting casualty of the pandemic. "We're committed to bringing fans as much on-track action as possible," Penske Entertainment Corp. President and CEO Mark Miles said in a statement. "Our updated schedule features additional racing at fan-favorite venues and adds to the total number of events on our calendar. "The COVID-19 situation continues to be dynamic and challenging for everyone, so we have developed contingency plans which will allow us to respond to changing conditions." Acura NSX Battles AMG GT R In Drag And Rolling Races, Brake Test
Both are performance coupes, but there are some major differences between one another. After pitting the original NSX against a new Civic Type R a month ago, the British folks over at Carwow have taken the latest and greatest NSX to duel Mercedes-AMG’s Beast of the Green Hell, the GT R. While they’re both performance cars in coupe shape, that’s pretty much where the similarities end as there are some huge differences worth noting. For starters, the very green AMG is rear-wheel drive whereas the NSX has an all-paw arrangement allowing it to better channel power to the wheels in a drag race. Then there’s the powertrain, a conventional biturbo 4.0-liter V8 in the GT R compared to an intricate biturbo 3.5-liter V6 working together with three electric motors. Affalterbach’s weapon has 577 horsepower and 516 pound-feet (700 Newton-meters) on tap while the hybrid Acura/Honda supercar offers a lower combined output of 573 hp and 476 lb-ft (645 Nm). Racing roundup: NASCAR transition almost complete
William Byron won Sunday’s NASCAR Cup race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Myatt Snider finished first in the Xfinity Series race at the same place on Saturday and this week’s Sermon, which is pretty heavy on politics (hint: F1 and Saudi Arabia), can be found way down at the bottom of this report. First, the Cup race. The transition of NASCAR drivers from a bunch of good ol’ boys to prep-school graduates was perfectly illustrated on Sunday by Byron’s drive to victory in the No. 24 car made famous by Jeff Gordon, who owns half of this entry. NASCAR used to be the world’s last major racing series where, unlike Formula One or IndyCar or all the various “ladders,” pure, unadulterated talent behind the wheel and the courage to go out there in the first place gave a driver the potential to perhaps land a competitive ride. Jeff Gordon is a perfect example. But the days are gone when guys like Alan Kulwicki or Geoff and Brett Bodine could wrench and then race their own stock car or NASCAR … [Read more...] about Racing roundup: NASCAR transition almost complete
Motorcycling: Marquez celebrates first MotoGP win in esports race
LONDON: Alex Marquez celebrated a first MotoGP win - even if only virtually - in a '#StayAtHomeGP' esports race featuring 10 top riders including older brother and six-time world champion Marc. Due to the coronavirus pandemic that has brought live sport to a standstill, the 23-year-old Moto2 champion is still waiting to debut in the top category after moving up to partner Marc at Repsol Honda. The opening race in Qatar on Mar 8 was cancelled and all other races up to May 17 have been postponed, with more likely to be stalled. Sunday's light-hearted online race, with riders joining remotely, was put on by MotoGP organisers to give fans something to watch while reinforcing the message about staying safe at home. "I am really pleased to win my first race!" joked Alex, whose brother has won the last four MotoGP titles and triumphed in 12 of last year's 19 races with single-season point and podium records. The Spaniard said Indonesian esports racer Putut Maulana had given him … [Read more...] about Motorcycling: Marquez celebrates first MotoGP win in esports race

LONDON: Formula One drivers will join video gamers in a series of virtual grands prix to replace races postponed by the coronavirus outbreak, the sport announced on Friday. The virtual race will be over 28 laps, half the usual distance of the real one under the Sakhir floodlights. "Every subsequent race weekend will see the postponed real-world Formula One race replaced with a Virtual Grand Prix," Formula One said in a statement. The Esports Virtual Grand Prix Series will run until May. The season-opening Australian and showcase Monaco grands prix have been cancelled along with the races in Bahrain, Vietnam, China, the Netherlands and Spain.
