Russia to Germany gas pipeline targeted in US defence bill

WASHINGTON: The annual US defence policy bill unveiled by lawmakers late on Thursday contains sanctions that backers say will halt one of Russia's biggest projects in Europe: the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. The US$11 billion Nord Stream 2 project, led by Russian state energy company Gazprom and aimed at doubling the existing pipeline's capacity, is more than 90 per cent complete. Russia says the project to deliver gas under the Baltic Sea to Europe via Germany will begin operating next year. They say the project, which would bypass Ukraine, depriving it of lucrative transit fees, would boost Moscow's economic and political leverage over Europe. The sanctions in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) target any companies and individuals providing help to the project, including upgrading of a ship needed to lay the pipeline, … [Read more...] about Russia to Germany gas pipeline targeted in US defence bill

Arteta savours ‘special’ Mourinho in Spurs documentary

REUTERS: Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta said he is a huge admirer of Tottenham Hotspur counterpart Jose Mourinho's management style and was able to learn from the Portuguese by watching Spurs' all-access documentary series. The Amazon Prime documentary 'All or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur' followed the club during the 2019-20 season, during which Mourinho replaced Mauricio Pochettino as Spurs manager, before guiding them to a sixth-placed Premier League finish. Ahead of Sunday's north London derby between Arsenal and Spurs, Arteta said by watching the series he gained some insights from one of the most successful coaches in the game. "There are some important moments in that documentary when you can pick some relevant things of why he is getting the success that he is getting," Arteta told a news conference. "Mourinho has something really special, that whatever he wants to get into the football club, he manages to do it and he believes that in a way that players at the end they … [Read more...] about Arteta savours ‘special’ Mourinho in Spurs documentary

MADRID: Zinedine Zidane admitted he has no plans for a lengthy stay as Real Madrid's manager after coming through the latest of many challenges in his reign by guiding his side into the Champions League knockout stages on Wednesday (Dec 9). The coach was backed into a corner after defeats to Alaves and Shakhtar Donetsk but victory over Sevilla in La Liga and a commanding 2-0 win over Borussia Moenchengladbach, which meant Madrid finished top of Champions League Group B, has eased the pressure on him. Yet he ruled out following in the footsteps of Alex Ferguson, who spent 26 years in charge of Manchester United. "I will never be Madrid's Ferguson, I'm sure of that," Zidane told a news conference after Madrid booked their place in the Champions League knockouts for the 24th consecutive season. "What I really want is to enjoy what I'm doing, I don't know for how long I will stay here so I don't even think about it." Zidane, who first took charge of Madrid in 2016 and is in his … [Read more...] about Football: Zidane pleased to overcome latest challenge but dismisses Ferguson comparison

In an interview with the Times, Allegri said he is improving his English language skills and looking for a fresh challenge in Europe. "I would like to experience the Premier League," Allegri said.
