Pope installs new cardinals, including first African-American

VATICAN CITY: Pope Francis on Saturday (Nov 28) installed 13 new cardinals, including the first African-American to hold the high rank, further expanding the pontiff's impact on the group that will one day elect his successor. The cardinals were installed in a ceremony, known as a consistory, that was markedly slimmed down because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of the usual thousands, only 10 guests per cardinal were allowed in St Peter's Basilica as the pope gave the men their ring and traditional red hat, known as a biretta. Nine of the 13 are under 80 and eligible under Church law to enter a secret conclave to choose the next pope from among themselves after Pope Francis dies or resigns. It was Pope Francis' seventh consistory since his election in 2013. He has now appointed 57 per cent of the 128 cardinal electors, most of whom share his vision of a more inclusive and outward-looking Church. Thus far, he has appointed 18 cardinals from mostly far-flung countries that … [Read more...] about Pope installs new cardinals, including first African-American

COVID-19 all clear for South African cricket team

CAPE TOWN: South Africa's limited overs team have returned an all clear after a third round of COVID-19 testing on the eve of their opening match against England at Newlands on Friday but have lost all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius to injury. The two players who tested positive last week were not part of the tested group and remain in isolation and are being monitored, said a statement from Cricket South Africa. "They are progressing well and are in good health" it added, without naming them. A fourth round of testing was conducted on Thursday with results expected later. The possibility of infections in the South African camp at one stage threatened the six-match English tour. The two countries are playing three Twenty 20 international and three One-Day Internationals at Newlands and in Paarl. Pretorius, 31, with 22 ODI caps, suffered a hamstring injury during a practice at Newlands and is expected to be out for a month. No replacement will be named, CSA added. … [Read more...] about COVID-19 all clear for South African cricket team

Remembering ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’: What You Should Know about the Real Fred Hampton

This story is co-published with Capital & Main Mourners came to view Fred Hampton's bodyin a small Oak Park, Illinois, funeral home shortly after his killing by the Chicago police in December 1969. He was only 21 years old. Black Panther sentries surrounded the building in their black leather jackets and black berets as I led a small group of white teenagers in the line that snaked through the sanctuary. When we got to the open casket, we saw Fred laid out with a rifle, beads and a copy of the Black Panther paper under his arm. The teenagers had met Hampton before he became a Panther, back when he was head of the West Suburban NAACP Youth Council. I was a YMCA youth worker in 1968-69 outreaching to kids in Cicero and Berwyn, two self-described whites-only Chicago suburbs of mostly Eastern European families. Fred was willing to meet with these kids, most of whom had never spoken with an African American in their lives. All they knew about Black people was the vitriol they … [Read more...] about Remembering ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’: What You Should Know about the Real Fred Hampton

Two dead in inferno of Spain building occupied by squatters

MADRID: Firefighters in northeastern Spain found two bodies in an abandoned building occupied by migrants and other squatters that caught fire and partially collapsed, while emergency works continued on Thursday (Dec 10) to extinguish the flames and assess if more people were trapped inside. The fire in Badalona, a suburban town of 200,000 north of Barcelona, also injured at least 18 people, including three who are in very critical condition, authorities said. Catalonia's acting regional chief, Pere Aragones, said that some 60 people have been accounted for so far, but that the industrial building could have been occupied by more than 100 squatters. Work was underway to fully extinguish the flames and stabilise the structure to safely access it and look for anyone else who might be trapped inside, Aragones told Spanish public broadcaster TVE. Local media reported that some of the squatters were African migrants who had found shelter in the abandoned building. … [Read more...] about Two dead in inferno of Spain building occupied by squatters

Commentary: Who owns the moon?

NEBRASKA: Most likely, the photo of Buzz Aldrin standing next to the first US flag planted on the Moon is the best-known picture of a flag ever taken. For those who knew their world history, it also rang some alarm bells. Only less than a century ago, back on Earth, planting a national flag in another part of the world still amounted to claiming that territory for the fatherland. Did the Stars and Stripes on the moon signify the establishment of an American colony? When people hear for the first time that I am a lawyer practising and teaching something called “space law,” the question they ask most frequently, often with a big smile or a twinkle in the eye, is: “So tell me, who owns the moon?” Of course, claiming new national territories had been very much a European habit, applied to non-European parts of the world. In particular the Portuguese, the Spanish, the Dutch, the French and the English created huge colonial empires. But while their attitude was very … [Read more...] about Commentary: Who owns the moon?
