The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) has once again put out a national call for grant applications for funds to assist internet projects across the country. Preference will be given to projects that not only benefit students but also those geared to assist Indigenous communities and those in rural and northern locations. CIRA has been providing more than $1 million in funding to various projects each year since 2014. For the past few years, including this year, it has offered $1.25 million in grants. Registered charities, non-profit organizations and researchers and academics affiliated with a post-secondary school in Canada are encouraged to submit funding applications for projects before the April 14 deadline. Traditionally, CIRA officials receive more than 100 applications for funding annually. “We usually fund 15- 20- per cent of the applications that come in,” said Maureen James, who manages CIRA’s Community Investment Program. “It’s very competitive.” … [Read more...] about CIRA seeks grant applications for internet projects

Google’s Anti-competitive Behavior Will be its Undoing | Opinion
The honeymoon period for giant internet companies is long gone, and no one is under more scrutiny than Google . On top of all that, any day now the Supreme Court will issue its decision in Google v. Oracle , a copyright infringement suit arising from Google's copying of over 11,000 lines of Oracle's computer code. Google has been using Oracle's code for more than a decade. It was caught flat-footed when Apple announced the first iPhone back in 2007. One way Google closed the gap was to copy Oracle's Java code into its Android mobile platform. Java was already a well-known and respected program, and by using it Google could entice app developers to write apps for its phones quickly, to catch up with Apple's early lead. Oracle offered a variety of license options for the use of Java, but Google refused them all. It wasn't the … [Read more...] about Google’s Anti-competitive Behavior Will be its Undoing | Opinion

The report builds on work that the partnership did leading up to and after November to identify and counter false narratives about the 2020 US presidential election. It describes its goals this way: The EIP’s primary goals were to: (1) identify mis- and disinformation before it went viral and during viral outbreaks, (2) share clear and accurate counter-messaging, and (3) document the specific misinformation actors, transmission … [Read more...] about How YouTube failed the 2020 election test
