Tiny newly discovered spider looks like Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night

Looking for spiders might not be high on everyone's to-do list right now, but thanks to citizen scientists and an Australian arachnologist, seven new colorful species of the teeny-tiny peacock spider have recently been discovered. One spider even resembles a famous Vincent van Gogh painting. "Meet Australia's seven newest species," Melbourne Museum arachnologist Joseph Schubert tweeted on Thursday. "Last year, I traveled the country collecting specimens of these new peacock spiders (some discovered by citizen scientists) and spent countless hours in the lab studying them. Some welcome news in tough times." In his article published in the science journal Zootaxa on Friday, Schubert describes the new peacock spiders, including one named Maratus constellatus after a well-known work of art. "The patterns on the abdomen to me look so much like Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh ," Schubert said in a video. "Hence the name constellatus, which means starry in Latin." … [Read more...] about Tiny newly discovered spider looks like Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night

Van Gogh’s 1887 work sold for $15.4 million

PARIS: One of the few paintings by Vincent Van Gogh still in private hands sold for more than 13 million euros at auction on Thursday (Friday in Manila), Sotheby’s said. “Street Scene in Montmartre” — on public display for the first time since its creation in 1887, after a century in the same collection — fetched 13.09 million euros ($15.4 million), the auction house said. At well above the estimate of 5 million to 8 million euros, the sale price was a record for the artist in France, it added. The painting was the highlight of an auction of 33 works from masters including Degas, Magritte, Modigliani, Klee, Rodin and his muse, Camille Claudel, sold in an auction live-streamed by Sotheby’s in Paris. The painting was reoffered at the end of the sale in Paris, after the auction house scrapped its initial sale earlier in the afternoon — where it fetched a slightly higher sale price — due to problems with online bidding. Other highlights included the sale of a recently restored … [Read more...] about Van Gogh’s 1887 work sold for $15.4 million

Dutch police arrest suspect in theft of Van Gogh, Hals paintings

Dutch police arrested a 58-year-old man on Tuesday on suspicion of stealing paintings by Vincent Van Gogh and Frans Hals from museums in the Netherlands last year. Police said the man was held at his home in the central town of Baarn on suspicion of stealing Van Gogh's 1884 painting "Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring" from the Singer Laren Museum near Amsterdam — where it was on loan from the Groninger Museum — in March 2020; and "Two Laughing Boys with a Mug of Beer," painted by Hals in 1626, from the Museum Hofje Van Aerden in Leerdam in August of last year. 'Two Laughing Boys with a Mug of Beer,' by Frans Hals, has been stolen three times now "This morning my colleagues arrested a 58-year-old man in Baarn and we suspect him of stealing two paintings by Frans Hals and Van Gogh," police spokeswoman Maren Wonder said in a video statement released on Twitter. The paintings have not yet been found, according to Wonder, who urged anyone with information on the matter to … [Read more...] about Dutch police arrest suspect in theft of Van Gogh, Hals paintings
