Vernon Reid and the Power of Comic Book Complexity

By Michael A. Friedman “Look in my eyes, what do you see? The cult of personality . I know your anger , I know your dreams . I’ve been everything you want to be. I’m the cult of personality.” — from “ Cult of Personality ” by Living Colour There is something enticing about viewing the world in simplistic all-or-none terms of “good” and “evil.” We love seeing ourselves as righteous and perfect, while viewing those with whom we have conflict as villainous and devoid of moral value. Today’s comic book artists honor the greats by using their art supplies

Any artist will tell you that a trip to the art supply store is like a trip to the candy store. It's a wonderful feeling, a rush, to load up on new supplies, full of fresh possibilities. But there's a deeper rush to be had, for a few. Maybe you can use the exact same supplies legendary EC and Marvel Comics artist Marie Severin used, or even (someday!) sit at Joe Kubert's drafting table. Colleen Doran feels the rush. The creator of A Distant Soil and recent Bram Stoker Award winner for her work on Snow, Glass, Apples , creates with the tools used by Marie Severin. She lucked into the supplies when Severin retired in the early '00s. "Marie was getting older, and decided she would be better off living in a senior facility," Doran recalls. "She ended up getting a really nice place, but it was a downsize in space. All of her things couldn't go in there." Doran's agent hipped her to the fact that some of Severin's supplies would be available. She got a treasure trove. … [Read more...] about Today’s comic book artists honor the greats by using their art supplies

Russo Brothers Say Animated ‘Magic: The Gathering’ Might Spinoff Into Live Action Series – Comic-Con

During their panel at Comic-Con , Anthony Russo and Joe Russo talked about a lot including Avengers: Endgame, but a considerable amount of panel was dedicated to their company AGBO and their slate of projects — including their upcoming adaptation of Magic: The Gathering at Netflix . The Russo Brothers said they grew up playing Magic and the adaptation was inevitable for them. The project may be animated, but Joe Russo teased that the series may grow into something else. “It’s an animated project with the potential to spin it off into live-action,” said Joe Russo. “It’s a game we love — we’re geeks and love Magic:The Gathering and we’re excited to tell stories with it.” In addition to Magic, the Russo Brothers talked about a mix of projects that are outside of the comic book world. In fact, they admitted that they were hunting down things that they loved from their childhood to make into films and projects. They talked about their version of The … [Read more...] about Russo Brothers Say Animated ‘Magic: The Gathering’ Might Spinoff Into Live Action Series – Comic-Con
