It's a hidden gem in the North Sydney municipality, just a few short kilometres across the water from the Sydney Opera House. A question from a Curious Sydneysider prompted us to delve deeper into the mysterious death of an Aboriginal woman in a rock shelter at the reserve, a place where locals picnic, walk their dogs and enjoy uninterrupted views of the harbour. Pompeii dig yields near-intact chariot
ROME-An ornate Roman chariot has been discovered near the buried city of Pompeii and is "almost intact", the archaeological park announced on Saturday, calling it a discovery with "no parallel" in the country. The four-wheeled processional carriage was found in the portico to stables where the remains of three horses were unearthed in 2018, including one still in its harness. Pompeii was buried in boiling lava when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, killing between 2,000 and 15,000 people. "A large ceremonial chariot with four wheels, along with its iron components, beautiful bronze and tin decorations, mineralized wood remains and imprints of organic materials (from the ropes to the remains of floral decoration), has been discovered almost intact," the archaeological park said. "This is an exceptional discovery … which has no parallel in Italy thus far-in an excellent state of preservation." The excavation site is known as the Civita Giuliana, a suburban villa that lies just a … [Read more...] about Pompeii dig yields near-intact chariot
Pompeii shows off treasures, sorcerer’s magic charms
Image: Andreas SOLARO/AFP Decades worth of archaeological finds went on public display Monday in Pompeii, shedding further light on the ancient Roman city destroyed by a volcanic eruption nearly 2,000 years ago. One is a sorcerer’s toolbox including dozens of amulets, rings, statuettes and other good luck charms made of ivory, bronze, glazed ceramics and amber — that were clearly not enough to protect the city from doom. “It’s one of the most peculiar things we found during our excavations: amulets we found in a box in a house… which seem to belong to a woman — or a man, perhaps — who used magic,” said Massimo Osanna, the director of the Pompeii archaeological park near Naples in southern Italy. He was speaking at the inauguration of the Antiquarium, a refurbished museum housing bronze statues, frescoes, gold and silver jewels as well as the haunting casts of those killed when Vesuvius erupted in October 79 AD. “You have some of the most important objects uncovered here … [Read more...] about Pompeii shows off treasures, sorcerer’s magic charms

Global resource consumption tops 100 billion tonnes for first time
PARIS: The world is using up more than 100 billion tonnes of natural resources per year while global recycling of raw materials has fallen, according to a report released on Tuesday (Jan 21). The share of minerals, fossil fuels, metals and biomass feeding into the global economy that is reused declined in two years from an already paltry 9.1 per cent to 8.6 per cent, the Circularity Gap Report 2020 found. "No country is meeting the basic needs of its citizens while also operating within the physical boundaries of our planet," said Marc de Wit, a director at the non-profit Circle Economy and lead author of the report. The resources fuelling the world economy increased more than 8 per cent in just two years from 93 billion tonnes in 2015 to 100.6 billion in 2017, the last year for which data is available. Since 1970, the human population has doubled, the global economy has grown fourfold, and trade has expanded tenfold, a trajectory that - in the absence of widespread recycling … [Read more...] about Global resource consumption tops 100 billion tonnes for first time
